Labour takes the formerly Independent seat, marking the second Labour gain so far in Barnsley’s local elections.

Cllr Margaret Sheard, who won today’s vote in Monk Bretton, lost her seat in 2019 after 20 years as a Councillor. She said: “Despite previously losing my seat, I’ve never stopped working.

“I’ve never had so many people in all these years coming up to me to tell me they support me. You can’t get better than that,” she said.

She is hoping to raise awareness on dementia during her tenure, having opened a dementia cafe in her ward.

“You can’t do what you want to do without a voice. And now I’ve got that,” she told Sheffield Wire.
