Leader of Barnsley council says “the Conservative’s days are over”
The leader of Barnsley the council, Stephen Houghton CBE has held his seat and Labour have retained control of the council in a strong show for the party.
The leader of the council said: "Labour can't be complacent but I think it's clear the public want change, the Conservative's days are over."
"I'm grateful to the people of Barnsley and we will continue to drive Barnsley forward."
Rockingham – Labour gain
Sherry Holling wins Rockingham, Barnsley for Labour adding to their string of gains and holds today.
Hillsborough goes to Greens
The Greens hold Sheffield's Hillsborough ward with 2726 votes to Christine Gilligan Kubo.
Labour holds Barnsley Council
The buzz around the hall is picking up as it was confirmed that Labour has retained its majority control with eight seats either held or won today. All seats announced so far have been won by either the Labour Party or the Liberal Democrats.
Labour candidates continue to roar in approval at the election of their party members.
Penistone East, projected to be a hotly contested seat between the Labour and Conservatives is the one to watch as the day progresses. We have heard that the ballot papers look evenly stacked between the two parties and it could come down to less than 200 votes.
Another Labour gain in Sheffield’s Walkley ward
John Wright takes the seat for Labour and Co-operative from the Greens, with 2789 votes.
Labour take Conservative Party’s only Sheffield seat
The Conservative Party has lost its only seat on Sheffield City Council to Labour's Mark Whittaker. 2399 votes went to Labour, with the Tories trailing behind at 1341 votes.
