After a generation of Conservatives Councillors, today marks a turning point for Penistone East as Labour Cllr Alex Burnett wins by 300 votes.
The Councillor put his win down to honesty, hard work and being out there on the doorsteps, listening to people’s issues.
Looking forwards, he said: “Hopefully this puts us on the road to Westminster. A Labour government would absolutely transform this country.
“Pennistone East is a bellwether seat – we have to win places like these villages to win the next general election.
This comes as Labour gained three out of 21 seats in Barnsley’s local election.
