{"id":79728,"date":"2026-04-27T16:22:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T15:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=79728"},"modified":"2026-04-27T16:23:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T15:23:28","slug":"festivities-celebrating-japanese-culture-are-on-for-their-15th-edition-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/27\/festivities-celebrating-japanese-culture-are-on-for-their-15th-edition-this-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Festivities celebrating Japanese culture are on for their 15th edition this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sheffield students have organised a celebration of all things Japanese to take place this Friday (1 May) in the Octagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/universityofsheffield-japansociety.studio.site\/\">The University of Sheffield&#8217;s Japan Society<\/a> is one of the biggest and most active Japanese societies in the UK, and won cultural society of the year in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The society welcomes anyone who has an interest in Japan and its rich culture, regardless of nationality, degree or background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students have worked in collaboration with sponsors to be able to put on the event which will have, performers, workshops, and decorations covering all aspects of Japanese culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival is open to everyone, whether you are a fan of &#8220;anime, traditional culture or delicious food&#8221; or are being introduced to this all for the first time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott Davies, President of University of Sheffield&#8217;s Japan Society, said: &#8220;The event began in 2011 as a fundraising event for disaster relief after the Tohoku earthquake in Japan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The event was a great success and now it has become an annual tradition.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year will mark the 15th edition of celebrations and the day will consist of a series of workshops including, flower arranging, calligraphy, taiko drumming, and a tea ceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will also be performances from an enka singer, a genre of music known for its sentimental ballads, and a shamisen player, coming all the way from Japan to attend the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Davies said: &#8220;We have a star line-up of performers this year but personally I am looking forward to seeing everyone enjoying the event and getting stuck in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A series of Sheffield-based Japanese restaurants, such as Guyshi, Osaka and Edo will also be hosting stalls selling food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event will take place from 2pm until 8pm on Friday and tickets can be bought on the doors, or via the link <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welcometosheffield.co.uk\/content\/events\/japan-day\/\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sheffield students have organised a celebration of all things Japanese to take place this Friday in the Octagon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":244,"featured_media":79823,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-79728","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
