just gobsmacked&#8221;: Woman appeals to find relatives of a WWI serviceman from Sheffield"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A British woman living in Belgium took to Facebook to find information on a World War One serviceman after tending to his grave for many years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joyce Mackenzie, 69, was overwhelmed by the attention the post received, and said: &#8220;The people have been amazing, and with the information I have received in private, online and in the photos, I&#8217;m just gobsmacked.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stumbled upon the graveyard in Vogen\u00e9e, Belgium, near her home, where the grave for Reginald Dodds was left untidy and neglected, leading her to decide to tidy it herself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Nobody asked me to do it, I just did it because it was a downright disgrace,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The post on the Sheffield Community group filled with details on Mr Dodds from excerpts from his obituary published in the formerly named &#8216;Sheffield Daily Telegraph&#8217;, to family gravestone inscriptions, as well as people praising Mrs Mackenzie for her kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reginald was a Sergeant Observer for the RFC and RAF, and died at 19-years-old on 10 November 1918, just one day before the armistice that ended the war was signed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was the son of William Harvey and Bertha E Dodds and lived on Abbeydale Road, Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Untitled-1-baa-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Untitled-1-baa-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Untitled-1-baa-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mr Dodd&#8217;s grave in 1935 (left) and when Mrs Mackenzie started tending to it (right)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Locals in Vogen\u00e9e organised a centenary commemoration service in 2018 to mark 100 years since Mr Dodds died, and that day Mrs Mackenzie received a diploma to thank her for her efforts of remembrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cIt was such a long time ago, but it\u2019s just a young guy from Sheffield who went off to war and didn\u2019t come back, and now he\u2019s all here alone in the middle of nowhere in Belgium, but he\u2019s not forgotten.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, she battled a serious case of pneumonia which motivated her to reach out on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was so badly ill last year, I really thought I was going, so I thought it really is time, it\u2019s now or never,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"708\" height=\"1024\" Dodds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Information on those who died in service can be found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website, to commemorate their contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Megan Maltby, head of public engagement at the CWGC, said: \u201cEvery grave we care for matters, and each represents and individual story of service and sacrifice that deserves to be remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is lovely to hear that Joyce is remembering this fallen serviceman, Reginald Dodds, in her community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Mrs Mackenzie
