{"id":79154,"date":"2026-04-20T15:25:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T14:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=79154"},"modified":"2026-04-20T15:27:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T14:27:32","slug":"brass-band-concert-aims-to-raise-money-to-fix-church-roof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/20\/brass-band-concert-aims-to-raise-money-to-fix-church-roof\/","title":{"rendered":"Brass Band concert put on to fund repair of broken church roof"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A local band from Barnsley has announced a charity concert next month, as they look to help raise the \u00a340,000 needed to repair a church roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dodworth Colliery Brass Band are supporting St. John&#8217;s Church in Dodworth, in aid of their mission to repair the damaged building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the band and the church have been in Dodworth for nearly 200 years, and have forged a good relationship over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"634\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/c16d36aa-8342-4d3b-931c-363493d34f7c-1024x634.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/c16d36aa-8342-4d3b-931c-363493d34f7c-980x607.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/c16d36aa-8342-4d3b-931c-363493d34f7c-480x297.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>A photo of Dodworth Colliery Brass Band [Credit: Dodworth Colliery Brass Band]<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Morag McKay-Ellison, the Secretary of the band said: &#8220;Supporting local community is important to Dodworth Band.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve been here since 1836, proudly so, but we need to develop too so this shows our community spirit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band and the church have supported one another through thick and thin, and Mrs McKay-Ellison wants to give back as much as possible, as &#8220;the church elders and volunteers are there for the band, so now we need to repay their support&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs McKay-Ellison hopes those who attend leave &#8220;feeling good about supporting a community space&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canon Keith Farrow, a vicar in West Barnsley, said the church is &#8220;thrilled that the band wish to support us&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"724\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ec5d8f0b-ecdd-4f24-8ebb-6892ecedba94-724x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79203\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7070352223352131;width:338px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>A poster promoting the event [Credit: Dodworth Colliery Brass Band]<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The roof of the church has broken down over many years over wear and tear, and it will cost \u00a340,000 plus VAT in order to complete the essential repairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those within the church are hopeful this concert can raise the vital funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canon Keith said: &#8220;The church is part of the fabric and community life of Dodworth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We do not get huge funding from the Church of England and the congregation has to raise all the finance for day to day running and repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It should be a beautiful space for people to come and worship and pray in.&#8221;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"766\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/66cb245e-c093-45de-9114-c1e3d1746678-766x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79222\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7480570344532158;width:250px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/66cb245e-c093-45de-9114-c1e3d1746678-766x1024.jpg 766w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/66cb245e-c093-45de-9114-c1e3d1746678-480x641.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 766px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">St. Johns Church in Dodworth.
