{"id":79094,"date":"2026-04-20T15:48:33","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T14:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=79094"},"modified":"2026-04-20T17:18:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T16:18:06","slug":"sheffield-hatters-win-the-super-league-finals-during-heritage-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/20\/sheffield-hatters-win-the-super-league-finals-during-heritage-game\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Hatters win the super league finals during heritage game"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Snooker \" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DJgpH3djZLs?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A game honouring their predecessors and a victory photo that is a blend of new and old, the Sheffield Hatters have won the final of the women&#8217;s basketball super league against the Leicester Riders with a score of 106 to 67.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team was founded by the late Betty Codona in 1961 and was the only women&#8217;s basketball team in England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basketball has changed drastically since then, becoming more commercialised, and even more physical but the Hatters remain one of the strongest teams in the league.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jim Saker, the chairman of SLB Women, wanted, at the beginning of his career, to give women in basketball a voice. It wasn&#8217;t until his daughter corrected him, that he realised his purpose to teams like the Hatters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;She told me to stop being patronising, that my job was to elevate women&#8217;s voice in basketball as they already have a voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So that&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve been trying to do, elevate their voices.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Saker then added: &#8220;The Hatters are one of the strongest teams in the league at the moment, they have got a great heritage and a great history.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a stadium filled with fans, their cheers echoing  &#8220;We are the champions&#8221;, the song played as the team secures their victory, it is clear they do have that voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anne Burdett is an ex-Sheffield Hatter, who played during the 60s, came to the final to cheer her team on and support them. She said: &#8220;I have to say, it&#8217;s much more physical. I was a physical player, but I wouldn&#8217;t compete with these girls now.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burdett first joined the team after trying to join a baking class at night school, only to find out the course was full. She ended up heading down to the gym and joining the basketball team, as a complete beginner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: &#8220;Betty, who was in charge, was wonderful. I learned as I went along. I played for so many years and I\u2019ve always tried to stay with the group because we were so close. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, I wouldn&#8217;t change a thing.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"933\" height=\"584\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152142-Original-Sheffield-Hatters-team-60s-.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152142-Original-Sheffield-Hatters-team-60s-.png 933w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152142-Original-Sheffield-Hatters-team-60s--480x300.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 933px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The members of the original Sheffield Hatters team from 1961 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Anne is one of the many ex-Sheffield Hatters that were honoured during halftime, as player from the 1960s-2000s were called onto the court to stand where they had once competed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yuri Matischen, who commentated on the match as it unfolded, said: &#8220;Current players, tonight is a reminder you&#8217;re a part of something much bigger than yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> &#8220;You stand on the shoulders of women in this arena and those who came before you, this is what allows you to wear that jersey today.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the ex-hatters on the court stands Vanessa Ellis, Betty Codona&#8217;s daughter, who has been coaching the team for 15 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"648\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152416-coach-vanessa-1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152416-coach-vanessa-1-1.png 975w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152416-coach-vanessa-1-1-480x319.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 975px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vanessa Ellis, current Sheffield Hatters Coach signing one the basketballs to be used in the match <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Optimistic about her team&#8217;s chances, she said: &#8220;\u2019We\u2019ve had a good week\u2019s preparation, which is always nice, with the added extra of winning the league title tonight at home in front of our home crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebration ended with awards being handed out, and a video of the current players thanking the hatters that came before them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"965\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152321-Previous-Sheffield-Hatters-get-awards.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152321-Previous-Sheffield-Hatters-get-awards.png 965w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-20-152321-Previous-Sheffield-Hatters-get-awards-480x308.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 965px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ex Sheffield Hatters members from the years 1961 to 2000<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Burdett talked about the sense of community she felt on the team, and how years after they have all left they are still close friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sentiment is echoed by Shauna Harrison, a current Hatter who felt &#8220;ecstatic&#8221; after her win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: &#8221;&nbsp;We knew it was going to be a tough game with Leicester, they always put up a fight, but having all the previous players here supporting us really pushed us to perform for them today.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shauna&#8217;s interest in basketball started in primary school, when the hatters came to her school and held a six-week programme, at the end of which they asked her to join their junior team.
