{"id":78314,"date":"2026-03-23T15:03:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=78314"},"modified":"2026-03-23T16:35:53","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T16:35:53","slug":"sheffield-council-urged-to-end-pattern-of-failure-on-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/23\/sheffield-council-urged-to-end-pattern-of-failure-on-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield council urged to end &#8220;pattern of failure&#8221; on race"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Race Equality Assembly was held this weekend at Ellesmere Children\u2019s Centre, highlighting a &#8220;pattern of failure&#8221; in Sheffield City Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are people within the community who have seen the same pattern decade after decade, the same pattern of failure and the pretence of inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the damning conclusion of city businessman, and former chair of the Burngreave New Deal for Communities, Ronnie Lewin, after a community event was held in Sheffield to tackle a perceived lack of action on racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This came as a result of a 2022 report from the Sheffield Race Equality Commission (REC), which highlighted a number of key recommendations the council could take to improve the lives of the local community, including empowerment for under-represented ethnic communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, nearly four years after the findings were published, there is a belief that there has been very little meaningful change from the Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Lewin said: &#8220;There are a lot of people who feel that the process is very tokenistic. It is not inclusive, despite claims otherwise.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way forward, he believes, involves accountability from those in charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You must have named accountable people, you have to have a budget, and you have to have inclusion reflective of the city to make sure that whoever is putting the strategy together is being held to account at key milestones.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3-interviewees-1024x652.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3-interviewees-1024x652.png 1024w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3-interviewees-980x624.png 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3-interviewees-480x306.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Interviewees, from left to right: Ronnie Lewin, Moussa Sylla, Lee Jasper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on this, Lee Jasper, co-founder of Operation Black Vote and a key speaker at the event, said: \u201cBy the council\u2019s own admission, from their own evaluation, they have not been able to implement all the recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Given that there is a local election in May, this is the perfect time for the local community to come together, to see what has been delivered, what hasn\u2019t been delivered.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assembly aimed to tackle key areas which they felt had not been properly addressed so far by the council, such as health inequalities, policing and economic inclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When talking about the Council&#8217;s response, Mr Jasper said: \u201cThe danger is that it can become performative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Council is missing an opportunity to co-produce a strategy with the community, which has a lot of knowledge, experience and wisdom, and if they only tapped into that in a co-productive fashion, then they could enhance their performance.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moussa Sylla, a community engagement practitioner with Community Organisers who was also involved in the Assembly, said: &#8220;We want to enable people from the community to create a space where they can come up with solutions, which are from and within the community. And that was the first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a result of last Saturday\u2019s meeting, I think we have achieved that purpose.
