The conflict has since spread to Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iran has responded by almost completely blocking ship movements through the vital global shipping route, the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/How-is-the-US-Iran-war-impacting-fuel-prices-in-the-UK-819x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78160\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7998138731013394;width:628px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicky Robinson is one of Sheffield&#8217;s drivers with increasing fuel prices on her mind. She said: \u201cWhen we&#8217;ve had crises before it&#8217;s always the fuel prices that are affected first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m looking at changing my car at the moment, so we have been looking at electric options instead of fuel.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who drive to work, or as part of their work, are at the sharp end of the surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Robinson added: &#8220;My son travels an hour and a half to work every day so he&#8217;s noticed it in his fuel bill because it&#8217;s now costing him \u00a3150 a week just to get to work. It would cost \u00a3100 before, so its increased quite a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petros is a delivery driver for courier service Evri. He has to cover his own fuel costs as part of his role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m self employed so what I used to get as disposable income has been significantly reduced by close to 5%, which is very much looking at the people that depend on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s affecting almost every sector of the economy, even in the retail sector we find out that fuel prices are also increasing. It&#8217;s having an impact in the lives of many of us, especially those of low income.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How are drivers in Sheffield being impacted by rising fuel costs?\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jFIfRLd-tUI?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/5-1-819x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78083\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7998113652440462;width:474px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Petros is originally from Zimbabwe, and told Sheffield Wire: &#8220;It&#8217;s actually affecting us not only here in the UK but also back home in Africa, its having a very huge impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gary Smith, General Secretary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmb.org.uk\/\">GMB Union<\/a>, said: \u201cThe escalating conflict in the Middle East shows it\u2019s absolutely vital that the UK has a secure domestic oil and gas supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Years of mismanagement from the Conservatives have left the country terribly exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Government must grasp the nettle and act to ensure our oil and gas policy helps protect the UK from global turbulence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another driver, David, told Sheffield Wire he&#8217;d heard petrol station staff had been getting &#8220;hassle&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You feel like they&#8217;ve gone up really quickly, and does that reflect the market? I know petrol employees are getting a lot of abuse, so that isn&#8217;t great either.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Government have today announced a series of supports, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/over-50-million-to-help-families-struggling-with-soaring-heating-oil-costs#:~:text=Chancellor%20confirms%20over%20%C2%A350,such%20as%20petrol%20and%20gas.\">\u00a353 million for low income families who heat their homes with oil.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, concerns are rising around the wider impacts of a global energy crisis, that so far are yet to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen Barnard, Director of Policy and Research at food poverty charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trussell.org.uk\/\">Trussell<\/a> said: &#8220;Too many people are being forced to skip meals so their children can eat, or survive on cups of tea because they don\u2019t have any food left in the cupboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The pandemic and cost of living crisis have left deep scars. Severe hardship still weighs heavily on daily lives, leaving people feeling overlooked and left behind. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As we face uncertain times again, progress can be too easily undone.
