{"id":77752,"date":"2026-03-16T11:29:47","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T11:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=77752"},"modified":"2026-03-17T09:56:47","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T09:56:47","slug":"this-will-help-engineer-some-kind-of-curiosity-sheffield-becomes-second-city-to-host-pop-up-planetarium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/16\/this-will-help-engineer-some-kind-of-curiosity-sheffield-becomes-second-city-to-host-pop-up-planetarium\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;This will help engineer some kind of curiosity&#8221;: Sheffield becomes second city to host pop-up planetarium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A planetarium is bringing space to the town centre as it begins its run in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to its website, <a href=\"https:\/\/planetariumgo.co.uk\/\">Planetarium Go <\/a>aims to &#8220;make astronomy accessible, exciting, and deeply&nbsp;inspiring\u2014sparking curiosity about&nbsp;our planet and the cosmos beyond&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attendees can choose from a variety of films accessible to all ages, and can sit back and relax in a deck chair as they stare up at the virtual stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planetarium Go started in Spain, before coming to Battersea Power Station in February this year, and plans to visit Hull and Manchester next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelseii Brown, an employee at the planetarium, said: &#8220;No matter if you are a kid or an adult you can actually learn something from this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There was a long time where space kind of got a little bit less prioritised &#8211; now I think it&#8217;s time to bring it back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Stuff like this will help engineer some kind of curiosity for the final frontier. Once we understand space we understand why we are here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our curiosity for the stars &#8211; for space &#8211; helped us in science, it helped us in general relativity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One viewer, who attended with his grandchildren, said: &#8220;I was thinking about the children, and that the language was going to be hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s taken in a lot more than I feared.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Planetarium Go!\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pJHicnB2RXA?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Planetarium Go! shows a variety of films on the wonders of space<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geoff Charlton, secretary of the Sheffield Astronomical Society, believes that educating people on the wonders of space can help give us better perspective on our problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Everyone has got lots of problems and lots of issues, and you look up and you think &#8216;well, really? does it really matter?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You look up at the skies and you see what is going on and you think &#8216;well maybe for a few minutes my problems don&#8217;t really matter&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It makes me feel insignificant.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Charlton works with organisations like Cubs and Brownies to educate people about space, hoping to inspire children by showing them the true scale of things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;We&#8217;ve had a few members who have come and then gone on to do astrophysics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the biggest things missing in the world is curiosity.
