{"id":76739,"date":"2026-02-23T11:10:42","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T11:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=76739"},"modified":"2026-02-23T12:11:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T12:11:49","slug":"barnsley-sports-club-offering-free-tennis-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/02\/23\/barnsley-sports-club-offering-free-tennis-session\/","title":{"rendered":"Barnsley sports club offering free tennis session"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A sports club is offering the chance for people to come and learn a new skill, as they aim to &#8220;get more people playing tennis.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barnsley Lawn Tennis Club have announced the return of their twice yearly event, in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association&#8217;s (LTA) Barclays Big Tennis Weekend, set to take place on 22 March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the committee members Gary Maskrey said there is an aim : &#8220;to attract new members to the club.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of people playing tennis increases every year, according to a 2024 study by LTA around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lta.org.uk\/news\/britain-at-the-forefront-of-global-rise-in-tennis-participation\/#:~:text=Britain%20grew%20by%2044%25%20to%20around%205.6m%20people%20(10%25%20of%20the%20population)%2C\">10% of the adult population<\/a> are playing tennis, with Britain sitting at top spot in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lta.org.uk\/news\/britain-at-the-forefront-of-global-rise-in-tennis-participation\/#:~:text=ITF%20report%20ranks%20Britain%20No.1%20on%20this%20measure%20above%20other%20Grand%20Slam%20nations\">global rankings for percentage of population playing tennis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club from Barnsley have been capitalising on this surge, Mr Maskrey said: &#8220;If you have ever fancied playing tennis or taking it up as a hobby, then these days are a great opportunity to try your hand, as well as health benefits there is also the social side of the club to get involved in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event will have tailored coaching sessions depending on ability levels, as well as a tour of the facilities and a chance to meet current members of the club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a wide range of ages within the club, with over 300 members, they have men&#8217;s, ladies&#8217; &amp; mixed teams playing in the Sheffield and district leagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club have had many of these events over the years, as they continue to get more people into the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mr Maskrey the events have been very popular in the past, he said: &#8220;People have commented that they have enjoyed the afternoon getting the chance to play tennis and enjoyed the atmosphere around the club.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A sports club is offering the chance for people to come and learn a new skill, as they aim to &#8220;get more people playing tennis.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":251,"featured_media":76742,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[27,1],"tags":[337,2177,338,45,390],"class_list":["post-76739","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sport","category-uncategorized","tag-barnsley","tag-lawn-tennis","tag-south-yorkshire","tag-sport","tag-tennis"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
