{"id":76554,"date":"2025-12-12T16:15:52","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T16:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=76554"},"modified":"2025-12-12T16:49:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T16:49:36","slug":"its-high-time-we-did-it-sheffield-e-bike-scheme-to-arrive-next-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/12\/12\/its-high-time-we-did-it-sheffield-e-bike-scheme-to-arrive-next-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cIt\u2019s high time we did it\u201d: Sheffield e-bike scheme to arrive next summer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sheffield is set to catch up with neighbouring UK cities with an e-bike scheme launching next summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lime, Voi and Beryl are among the companies interested in bidding to be Sheffield&#8217;s first electronic bike scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Sheffield residents remember the failure of the cycle-hire scheme in 2018 by Ofo, where vandalism coincided with the company going under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Craig Gamble Pugh said he was confident that electric bikes can handle Sheffield&#8217;s hilly topography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;It&#8217;s been nearly eight years. When they were being chucked into the canal and stuff, those schemes were in their infancy. There&#8217;s a whole industry sector and body of expertise now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cycling advocacy group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclesheffield.org.uk\/\">CycleSheffield<\/a>, has had meetings with Voi, and ran a ride event with Lime last Saturday, testing the bikes on Sheffield&#8217;s hills and discussing GPS virtual docking stations along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"852\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/att.Q1CmLDIjlxovRFmNS7WTRHnbqe94_RawbI9bX-G_VLg-852x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76566\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">CycleSheffield members tested Lime&#8217;s bikes on the hills last Saturday. It&#8217;s just a case of who&#8217;s going to be here first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an exclusive with Sheffield Wire, Mr Armitage added: \u201cWe know also, it&#8217;s not just e-bikes. The scheme is going to be with a company that also does scooters, so it will involve e-scooters as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CycleSheffield\u2019s goal is to promote and push the council to improve safe cycling and cycling provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Armitage is optimistic that, whichever company wins the contract, it will be a win for cycle safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cIt&#8217;s going to be really important to have more provision, more infrastructure, and these companies are really good at helping advocate for that as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey want safer cycling in the cities they operate in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nat Zimmermann, a member of CycleSheffield, also attended the Lime event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cA lot of cycling safety comes in strength in numbers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If people are used to seeing cyclists everywhere, when they turn left, they&#8217;re going to think; &#8216;Is there a cyclist coming up beside me?&#8217; Whereas if there&#8217;s only a few, it&#8217;s quite easy to forget.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"667\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/att.HguhIR-XmqxmoaM6VHArcovQZp7v8gF8pYr5lxw7tpM-667x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76564\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lime brought new bikes to the test ride that aren&#8217;t available in the UK. Photo courtesy of FuttFuttFutt Photography.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Gamble Pugh, whose ward is East Ecclesfield, said he is excited about giving people another option, especially for Sheffield&#8217;s less connected communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cThe further out you get, the more difficult it is to use those active travel options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of people in the city would like to be able to leave the car behind sometimes. Photo courtesy of FuttFuttFutt Photography.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere in the UK, e-bikes and scooters have been associated with safety concerns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2ejgrw9yepo\">the BBC<\/a> spoke to a lower limb surgeon at Royal London Hospital, who said e-bike accidents were a \u201cmassive burden\u201d on their department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londoncentric.media\/p\/lime-bikes-keep-breaking-londoners\">London Centric<\/a> spoke to three Londoners who suffered severe leg breaks after falling off Lime bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They reported: \u201cthe design, weight and speed of the e-bikes used by Lime can transform what should be relatively minor falls into life-changing injuries\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in Sheffield, the outlook among the council remains positive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Gamble Pugh said: \u201cSheffield has lagged behind.
