{"id":76272,"date":"2025-12-12T14:54:44","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T14:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=76272"},"modified":"2025-12-12T14:54:46","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T14:54:46","slug":"its-such-a-nice-surprise-to-see-them-christmas-tree-festival-lights-up-cathedral-and-enchants-visitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/12\/12\/its-such-a-nice-surprise-to-see-them-christmas-tree-festival-lights-up-cathedral-and-enchants-visitors\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;It&#8217;s such a nice surprise to see them&#8221;: Christmas tree festival lights up Cathedral and enchants visitors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The annual Christmas tree festival has returned to Sheffield Cathedral, with more than 40 trees on display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each has been decorated by a local charity or community group, and sponsored by local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favourite, with the winning organisation receiving a \u00a3250 prize as a donation to help support their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The organisations, whose trees each have a distinct and vibrant theme, include the Women&#8217;s Institute, Melanoma Focus, and the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind (SRSB). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rae Drury, who suffers from a degenerative eye disease, was drawn to the SRSB tree because of how colourful and bright the baubles were, before she realised that some were her own handiwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A keen crafter before her diagnosis, Ms Drury had donated her decorations to a tabletop sale at SRSB, and had wondered why they were not for sale there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: &#8220;I had no idea they would be on the tree, and I suddenly thought, &#8216;I made that&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s such a nice surprise to see them, I&#8217;m so glad I can see them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/rae-babuble-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76389\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of Rae Drury&#8217;s handmade ornaments on the SRSB tree <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SRSB has been helping Ms Drury on her diagnosis journey, as she is predicted to become partially-sighted, and then blind, despite undergoing laser eye surgery last week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said that the work they do is &#8220;life-changing&#8221;, and that the support that she has received, and continues to receive on her journey, is invaluable.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some organisations have chosen to use the festival as a chance to spread information and awareness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Women&#8217;s Institute (WI) on Ecclesall Road has decorated their tree in support of their national campaign <em>Bystanders Can Be Lifesavers!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This campaign is targeted at spreading knowledge and understanding of CPR, and advertises free online training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/orange-tree-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76391\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The <em>Orange the World <\/em>tree by the Stop Violence Against Women campaign<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The sign written by the WI next to the tree read: &#8220;Our tree is decorated with hearts made by our members to remind us all how we can help each other by learning about CPR.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the other trees also have a topical theme, with the <em>Stop Violence Against Women <\/em>tree decked in orange ribbon and tinsel, as part of their wider <em>Orange the World <\/em>campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each tree is accompanied by an informative sign, with many also including a QR code that allows people to donate, learn more, or follow the organisations&#8217; social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival is free to enter, and is open until 11 January 2026. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The annual Christmas tree festival has returned to Sheffield Cathedral, with more than 40 trees on display.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":268,"featured_media":76386,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[11,598],"class_list":["post-76272","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-charity","tag-christmas"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
