{"id":76112,"date":"2025-12-12T12:35:47","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T12:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=76112"},"modified":"2025-12-12T12:54:37","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T12:54:37","slug":"hospice-garden-transformed-into-festive-wonderland-raising-30000-for-patient-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/12\/12\/hospice-garden-transformed-into-festive-wonderland-raising-30000-for-patient-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Hospice garden transformed into festive wonderland, raising \u00a330,000 for patient care"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new winter wonderland in Rotherham is lighting up the dark nights, raising vital funds and showing that hospices can be places of joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 6 to 21 December, the garden of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotherhamhospice.org.uk\/support-us\/winter-wonder-garden\/\">Rotherham Hospice<\/a> will be full of lights, glittery reindeer, dancing elves, inflatable snowmen and a grotto for children to see Santa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily Dowd, Marketing and Communications Manager said: \u201cThe purpose of it was to try and bring more people into the hospice and to see it&#8217;s not a place of sadness all the time and there can be joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has brought new people in and I think it&#8217;s made a massive difference breaking the stigma of who we are and what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Winter Garden is a paid public event, but the families visiting patients in the hospice have free access to the garden and to the grotto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"777\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9252-1024x777.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9252-980x744.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9252-480x364.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yorkshire pudding wraps, mince pies and hot chocolates are among the treats on offer to families<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before she ran off to dial Santa into a podcast from the grotto, Paula Figueira, Fundraising Events Manager said:&nbsp; \u201cIt was a concept of the Chief Executive, Mat Cottle-Shaw. He\u2019s a very visual person and has brought it to life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe pulled us into a meeting and said \u2018how do you fancy this?\u2019. We were like \u2018oh that&#8217;s really quick!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a work in progress, we\u2019ve got snags and things like that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tip off from an elf revealed one of the \u201csnags\u201d was the big inflatable Santa and the grinch coming down in Storm Bram this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Ms Dowd said: \u201cWhen you get to the event and get to see kids enjoying it and families overwhelmed by it, then you realise what it&#8217;s all for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Dowd said at their private event for corporate supporters, a girl from their children\u2019s bereavement service opened the gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe absolutely loved it and loved Santa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"784\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9251-1024x784.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9251-980x750.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9251-480x368.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The five metre Christmas tree is illuminated with stars in memory of loved ones <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Dowd was optimistic this could become an important fundraising event for the hospice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rotherham Hospice is funded 37% through the NHS, with the other \u00a36.6m a year coming through fundraising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cEvents like this bring in a massive income. I think we&#8217;ve got over 2300 people booked on to come and see the gardens and \u00a330,000 so raised so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s all going to go into the hospice and all our services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"636\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9254-1024x636.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9254-980x609.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_9254-480x298.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hospice staff hope this event will become a &#8220;legacy&#8221; in Rotherham<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Inpatient Unit where we have 14 beds to care for patients in the hospice, hospice at home goes out to homes and cares for patients there,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLast year we saw 17000 patients across Rotherham so all this money will go into keeping those services going.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new winter wonderland in Rotherham is lighting up the dark nights, raising vital funds and showing that hospices can be places of joy.
