{"id":75681,"date":"2025-12-05T15:41:20","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T15:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=75681"},"modified":"2025-12-05T16:29:44","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T16:29:44","slug":"mp-swims-7km-to-raise-7k-for-a-fully-accessible-disabled-changing-room","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/12\/05\/mp-swims-7km-to-raise-7k-for-a-fully-accessible-disabled-changing-room\/","title":{"rendered":"MP swims 7km to raise \u00a37k for a fully accessible disabled changing room\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MP Marie Tidball has swam 7km, the distance between two towns within her constituency, as part of a fundraising campaign to make Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre more accessible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Penistone and Stocksbridge MP, was born with a congenital disability which affects all four limbs and has campaigned extensively for inclusive spaces for disabled people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Tidball first learnt to swim at the leisure centre as a child, said: &#8220;I wanted to give back to a very special place who gave me so much and I wanted to make sure that the facility is accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will not only make a difference to children and their sense of dignity and self-esteem but also to disabled parents so it will make a massive difference\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MP, who&#8217;s Crowdfunder is still open for donation, swam 280 lengths, the distance between her two constituencies, in just under four hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Tidball\u2019s fundraising goal of \u00a37k would contribute to approximately 20% of the total \u00a335,000 cost to convert an existing changing room at the leisure centre into a fully accessible one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cWhen I was at school they didn&#8217;t do any inclusive sports so you were just thrown in with other able bodied classmates and expected to do the sport the same way they did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I couldn\u2019t so the only way I could engage was to be the referee, and being out on a freezing cold field and not even able to take part in the game, was undignified and quite stigmatising for me, I found it very upsetting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activityalliance.org.uk\/how-we-help\/research\/10249-play-move-belong-active-futures-for-young-disabled-people-nov-25\">report<\/a> by Activity Alliance, only one in four disabled children can always join in on school sport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"948\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-1-1-948x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-75695\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marie Tidball pictured above, (Source: Marie Tidball)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Tidball said: \u201cThe sports changing rooms weren&#8217;t accessible so even just getting changed for sports was very stressful for me, and I didn&#8217;t want to have anyone helping me in front of my other classmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy the time I got to Year 9 I stopped doing PE lessons and did art lessons instead so I was essentially excluded from PE.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one of the first MP\u2019s to be elected with a congenital limb difference, Dr Tidball is determined to make a difference and promote opportunities around inclusive sports and facilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked how difficult the swim was, Dr Tidball said: \u201cI was really struggling 160 lengths in and I was panicking because I wasn&#8217;t even half way, and suddenly someone jumped in and swam alongside me and I realised it was Kim Leadbeater who is another MP who came to spur me on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first section was heavy going but the support from Kim and my family and friends who were there encouraged me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing the 4.5 mile race, she said: \u201cThere wasn&#8217;t a dry eye in the house in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdfunder.co.uk\/p\/swim-penistone-to-stocksbridge\">here <\/a>to see how she is getting on with her fundraising goal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marie Tidball, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has swam 7km, the distance between her two constituencies, in a bid to make Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre more accessible.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":252,"featured_media":75683,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-75681","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
