{"id":75236,"date":"2025-12-05T11:53:34","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T11:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=75236"},"modified":"2025-12-05T14:31:54","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T14:31:54","slug":"protesters-oppose-unfair-s35-greenbelt-development-outside-sheffield-town-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/12\/05\/protesters-oppose-unfair-s35-greenbelt-development-outside-sheffield-town-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesters oppose &#8220;unfair&#8221; S35 greenbelt development outside Sheffield Town Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Campaigners who are lobbying against the proposed developments on the S35 greenbelt site protested outside Sheffield Town Hall this week.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chapeltown, Grenoside and Ecclesfield <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saveourgreenbelt.net\/\">Save Our Greenbelt Action Group<\/a> chanted and held banners opposing Sheffield City Council&#8217;s greenbelt development plans, which include building &#8216;1,600 homes&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chair of the campaign group, Gill Travis, 63, told <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/\">Sheffield Wire<\/a> the main points of contention are that around 50% of the council\u2019s greenbelt development plans are in S35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also explained that more than 70 \u201cmajor\u201d documents were released without adequate time to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the protest on Wednesday, Ms Travis said: &#8220;We are asking the council to follow their own principles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s something called triple-lock, which is all about listening to the people. We\u2019re asking them to look at that, and also to look at the Lowcock Report.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.sheffield.gov.uk\/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=4037\">Lowcock Report<\/a>, also known as the Street Trees Inquiry, looked at failures in Sheffield City Council&#8217;s conduct and made recommendations for improvement, including a focus on communication between the council and residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council\u2019s triple lock combines three policy drivers &#8211; people, prosperity, and planet &#8211; which it says the city and its people \u201ccannot thrive without\u201d. Campaigners have disputed this, saying there are plenty of brownfield sites available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Once that heritage is gone, once that history is gone, once the animals are gone, once that land is gone \u2014 particularly because some of it is agricultural \u2014 we won\u2019t ever get it back<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Travis commended Clive Betts MP\u2019s \u201cbrilliant\u201d efforts to stand up for the S13 community and said that S35 residents \u201cdon\u2019t really feel they\u2019ve been very supported\u201d by their own MP, Dr Marie Tidball, who allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savesheffieldsgreenbelt.com\/post\/marie-tidball-hosts-s35-green-belt-event\">expressed sympathy<\/a> with the community but did not follow this up with further support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest concerns for us [S35] and S13 is that it\u2019s very unfair,&#8221; said Ms Travis. &#8220;It feels like they\u2019ve particularly gone with working class demographics on the basis that we might be a bigger pushover than the likes of Fulwood, Dore or Totley.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a sentiment that has since been confirmed to Sheffield Wire by Mr Betts himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle Sherriff, 64, who has lived in the S35 area all of her life, was at the protest on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She echoed Ms Travis&#8217; concerns that north Sheffield\u2019s greenbelt is being picked on because of its historically working-class demographic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>It feels like they\u2019ve particularly gone with working class demographics on the basis that we might be a bigger pushover than the likes of Fulwood, Dore or Totley<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Sherriff also condemned Sheffield City Council\u2019s Green Party coalition for failing to stand up for S35\u2019s greenbelt, calling their conduct \u201cdiabolical\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow could you possibly trust the Green Party [now]?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Campaigners who are lobbying against the proposed developments on the S35 greenbelt site protested outside Sheffield Town Hall this week.
