costs lead more women to work in the sex industry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The cost of living crisis and spiralling expenses have had far-reaching effects on society &#8211; including a rise in women taking on sex work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evidence submitted to parliament revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/writtenevidence\/64627\/pdf#:~:text=1.7%20In%20combination%20with%20experiences,bringing%20them%20into%20the%20country\">74%<\/a> of female sex workers citing poverty and the need to support their families as the main motivation for starting in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prostitutescollective.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Proceed-Without-Caution-Report.pdf\">The English Collective of Prostitutes<\/a> (ECP) explained that \u201cMost sex workers are mothers trying to do the best for their children.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One woman told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyalliance.org\/guest-blog-how-the-cost-of-living-crisis-is-impacting-the-lives-of-women-who-sell-or-exchange-sex\/#:~:text=At%20the%20same%20time%2C%20women,to%20get%20what%20\">The Poverty Alliance<\/a> why she works as an escort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s because I\u2019m poor,&#8221; she said. \u201cI can\u2019t live off of benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through her work as an escort she says she is able to provide her children with the basic essentials including food, clothes, warmth and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in the run-up to the 2024 General Election estimated that one in five people in the UK were living in poverty &#8211; a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrf.org.uk\/uk-poverty-2025-the-essential-guide-to-understanding-poverty-in-the-uk\">14.3 million<\/a> people.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And an article for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0096300324004910#:~:text=Introduction,research%20by%20Heilemann%20et%20al\">Science Direct<\/a> explained that \u201cpoverty and prostitution are inextricably connected.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/writtenevidence\/64627\/pdf#:~:text=Agenda%20welcomes%20the%20opportunity%20to,making%20up%20the%20vast%20majority1\">Data from the ECP<\/a> predicts that there are around 100,000 sex workers currently in the UK, compared to 72,800 in 2021, although numbers are difficult to determine due to it typically being a hidden population.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures suggest that the number of sex workers in the UK has increased by approximately 37% since the beginning of the cost of living crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Fiona Vera-Gray, one of the UK\u2019s leading feminist academics, said: \u201cEconomic inequality is a driver for violence against women and girls and it&#8217;s a driver for women entering prostitution.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some women who start working in the sex industry, they can make more money than they would from a minimum wage paying profession.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One sex worker told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/en\/beyond-trafficking-and-slavery\/we-don-t-do-sex-work-because-we-are-poor-we-do-sex-work-to-end-our-poverty\/\">Open Democracy<\/a>: \u201cAs sex workers we earn at least double the minimum wage.\u00a0We make enough to support five other adults in our families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average annual salary for a sex worker is around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.co.uk\/Salaries\/sex-workers-salary-SRCH_KO0,11.htm\">\u00a333,020<\/a>, compared to the National Living Wage which is approximately \u00a325,374 per year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although many individuals are starting sex work as a means to make money during this crisis, much like most other industries, it too is impacted by the decline in spending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research by <a href=\"https:\/\/nationaluglymugs.org\/2022\/12\/19\/report-sex-workers-experiences-of-the-cost-of-living-crisis\/#:~:text=19%20December%202022,the%20cost%20of%20living%20crisis\">National Ugly Mugs<\/a>, a national organisation providing greater access to justice and protection for sex workers,  found that seven out of 10 workers were directly experiencing negative impacts as a result of the cost of living crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was not limited to the expense of work supplies and a decrease in clients, but a problematic power imbalance as clients demand more services for less money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Vera-Gray explained the bias of this transaction in the industry, she said: \u201cIt definitely comes from a place of \u2018I\u2019ve bought you, now you have to do all of these things&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo actually make a difference, we need to go right back to root causes and that&#8217;s around value.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s around
