{"id":73461,"date":"2025-05-15T16:06:15","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T15:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=73461"},"modified":"2025-05-16T13:07:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T12:07:07","slug":"defibrillator-shock-life-saving-equipment-targeted-by-thieves-and-vandals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/15\/defibrillator-shock-life-saving-equipment-targeted-by-thieves-and-vandals\/","title":{"rendered":"Thieves and vandals put lives at risk by targeting defibrillators"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Staggering figures have revealed 124 defibrillators have been vandalised or stolen across England over the last two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data collected from a Sheffield Wire Freedom of Information request sent to all 39 police forces, has shown how even life-saving equipment is not safe from criminals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steve Cox, the CEO of charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-r-y.org.uk\/\">Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)<\/a>, stressed the life-saving benefits of defibrillators were also undermined by issues such as coded boxes and locations inside buildings &#8211; restricting the simplicity of their access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cDefibrillators are essential and we need to protect them, however, there are many situations where they are impractical, for example, with cyclists. It is not just about access to defibrillators but the need for mandatory screenings.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average cost of defibrillators varies between \u00a3700 and \u00a31,300 and while individual parts are not equally valuable, electrode pads and batteries have a more significant cost ranging between \u00a320 and \u00a3300.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/defibsupplies.co.uk\/resources\/the-alarming-rise-of-defibrillator-theft-across-the-uk\">DefibSupplies<\/a>, an NHS approved supplier, said thieves were stealing the devices to sell on the black market or even overseas, where they can command a high price.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defibrillators can be kept in locked or unlocked cabinets but insurance is rarely offered to those stored insecurely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This proves as a barrier to immediately accessing the equipment to save someone\u2019s life, yet protects the equipment from threat of theft or vandalism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as theft, a lack of awareness surrounding cardiac arrest and the use of defibrillators, is leading to acts of vandalism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen Barry, managing director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defibstore.co.uk\/\">Defibstore<\/a>, highlighted the significance of educating the public on what the equipment actually is and the significance of mandatory screenings to spread this awareness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cIf people are educated and there is more awareness around the importance of the equipment and what it does, I believe it would reduce vandalism and thefts.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"818\" height=\"834\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Reported-Defibrillator-Thefts-.png\" alt=\"Bar Chart Data of Reported Stolen and Damaged Defibrillators. \" class=\"wp-image-73637\" style=\"width:674px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Reported-Defibrillator-Thefts-.png 818w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Reported-Defibrillator-Thefts--480x489.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 818px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Cox added changes needed to be made to protect these essential appliances as when someone goes into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sja.org.uk\/get-advice\/first-aid-advice\/heart-conditions\/cardiac-arrest\/\">Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)<\/a>, the chance of success decreases by 10 per cent every minute that passes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWe need cameras on stored defibrillators as there needs to be free access.
