{"id":73366,"date":"2025-05-14T13:21:57","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T12:21:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=73366"},"modified":"2025-05-15T14:05:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T13:05:13","slug":"sober-not-boring-how-queer-rave-keeps-the-party-going-without-the-hangover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/14\/sober-not-boring-how-queer-rave-keeps-the-party-going-without-the-hangover\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cSober not boring\u201d: How Queer rave keeps the party going without the hangover\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The vibe at a Queer sober rave is \u201ca little bit wild and a little bit wholesome\u201d according to organisers who run alcohol-free LGBTQ+ events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House of Happiness was launched after its founders realised there was a gap in the market for dry, daytime, events which mimic a traditional night out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil Hudson-Basing, one of the co-creators, was inspired to help create the raves after he gave up alcohol for health reasons six years ago.  He was looking for a \u201cbig, bold, colourful party\u201d, as opposed to the wellness or recovery themes that often dominate LGBTQ+ sober events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we [other founders] love is partying,&#8221; says Neil, who began working on House of Happiness in October 2022. &#8220;None of us have an addiction or recovery story, none of us are interested in wellbeing or mindfulness.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With DJs, dancers, a photographer, and a fully stocked alcohol-free bar, the parties are everything you would expect from a typical club \u2013 without the 3am stumble home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"343\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Neil.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Neil.png 343w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Neil-201x300.png 201w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Neil Hudson-Basing at The House of Happiness D.I.S.C.O. event in February 2025. Credit: <a>@phoebe.shot.this<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil described how the culture around alcohol and excessive drinking within the Queer community draws people in and makes it difficult to get sober. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2024 report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drinkaware.co.uk\/news\/new-drinkaware-research-reveals-lgbtqplus-adults-are-more-likely-to-experience-harm-from-drinking#:~:text=LGBTQ%2B%20adults%20face%20higher%20rates,linked%20to%20hazardous%20alcohol%20use.\">Drinkaware<\/a> found 70% of LGBTQ+ drinkers engage in binge drinking, and members of the community are more likely than the general population to list coping and fitting in as reasons they consume alcohol. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>We wish that people knew how fun and how crazy life can be without alcohol &#8211; life can actually be better<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil found people less understanding when he chose to get sober for health reasons as opposed to those who stop drinking because of addiction. \u201cWhen you choose to give it up for lifestyle reasons it\u2019s a harder sell to get your friends on board,&#8221; he says. &#8220;People don\u2019t take you seriously, they\u2019ll take the p***, they\u2019ll try and tempt you. Credit: <a>@phoebe.shot.this<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil also explained how LGBTQ+ events have traditionally catered to cisgender, gay men, and that The House of Happiness has tried to counteract this by focusing on inclusivity, with rules including \u201crespect space, respect pronouns, respect individuality&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve all felt that feeling of not belonging, whether that is at a regular club where everyone is hammered or in a gay club because you don\u2019t fit a certain mould.
