{"id":72954,"date":"2025-04-28T14:00:05","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T13:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=72954"},"modified":"2025-05-28T15:55:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T14:55:22","slug":"ski-village-restoration-campaign-remembers-13th-anniversary-of-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/04\/28\/ski-village-restoration-campaign-remembers-13th-anniversary-of-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Ski village restoration campaign remembers anniversary of fire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On the 13th anniversary of the arson attack, campaigners and professional skiers have called on the council to take action to revive snow sports in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ski Village was set ablaze by vandals in 2012 and has never been restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one has been prosecuted by South Yorkshire Police and the village is now a hotspot for fly-tipping and vandalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council secured \u00a319.5m in funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/new-levelling-up-and-community-investments\">Levelling Up Fund<\/a>, and have contracted a New Zealand private developer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyline.co.nz\">Skyline Luge<\/a>, in December 2024, but no formal plans have been made public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pete Shipston, 51, founded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.revive-rewild.co.uk\">Revive Rewild<\/a>, a company focused on advocating for the return of the Ski Village to Sheffield and promoting the creation of green spaces across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company launched their campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.revive-rewild.co.uk\/rssv\">&#8216;Revive Sheffield Ski Village&#8217;<\/a> one month ago, and has gained a large number of supporters, including professionals who used to train on the dry slope.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Red Bull Skier and Campaign Leader Remember Ski Village on Arson Anniversary\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9MkeIFuCdMc?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cSheffield is the outdoor city. There\u2019s a wealth of talent that could easily be transferred from mountain biking, skating and gymnastics to Snowsports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have some cracking sportspeople in this city, they\u2019re out there and they\u2019re waiting for this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key campaigners have attended Sheffield City Council\u2019s extraordinary, transport, regeneration, climate policy committee meetings and raised official questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign currently has over 400 supporters and hopes to gain thousands more as the planning process moves forward to ensure a dry slope is included in the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The abandoned village has been repeatedly targeted by arsonists, the most recent incident occurred on 23 April, when South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue responded to multiple reports of a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson told the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckgx22zn120o\">BBC<\/a>&nbsp;they believed it was started deliberately.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ski village was a training hub for England\u2019s top skiers and snowboarders, who used its racing and freestyle facilities to train all year-round.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield-born skier, Paddy Graham, 37, emerged from the city&#8217;s Ski Village to become Britain&#8217;s leading freeskier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/paddy-graham-1024x681.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72980\" style=\"width:629px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/paddy-graham-980x652.webp 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/paddy-graham-480x319.webp 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redbull.com\/gb-en\/athlete\/paddy-graham\">Red Bull<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Graham was eager to show his competitors where he first learnt to ski, but it burned down just days before their trip.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cAlways for me growing up you would look up onto the hill and see the ski slope there.
