{"id":72896,"date":"2025-04-28T12:48:13","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T11:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=72896"},"modified":"2025-05-27T15:29:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T14:29:43","slug":"we-have-never-had-equality-trans-rights-activists-rally-across-the-uk-following-courts-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/04\/28\/we-have-never-had-equality-trans-rights-activists-rally-across-the-uk-following-courts-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cWe have never had equality\u201d: Trans rights activists rally across the UK following court&#8217;s ruling\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hundreds of people gathered in over 20 UK cities, including Sheffield, this weekend, to show solidarity with the transgender community after the Supreme Court ruled the definition of a woman refers to biological sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lexi S, 21, a transwoman, who attended the Bite Back 4 Trans Rights march on Saturday, expressed the trans community has never had equality and even more so now after the court\u2019s judgement on 16 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sheffield Trans Rights March\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uJuanBA7UVg?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Supreme Court ruled under the Equality Act 2010 the definition of a woman refers only to biological sex and did not include transgender women, even those who hold a gender recognition certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lexi believes this ruling is dangerous, particularly for transwomen, who will now have to use bathrooms that do not align with their gender identity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling also means that trans people will be assigned to hospital wards and prisons that coincide with their biological sex and not their gender identity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cIt means people will make our lives miserable, it means being told we are somehow lesser.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This morning the leader of the Conservative party, Kemi Badenoch, suggested transgender people should use disabled toilets following the court\u2019s decision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has backed the court\u2019s ruling and even welcomed it despite in 2021 advocating his party was committed to updating the Gender Recognition Act so trans people would be able to self identify.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organiser of the march and Sheffield student, Carys Mcloughlin,19, stated she was \u201cdisgusted\u201d by Starmer\u2019s response to the ruling considering he had championed the trans community prior to the judgement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cPeople who have voted have been deceived and it&#8217;s not right. None of this right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"611\" height=\"812\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Newsday-Week-9-Image-1-.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72959\" style=\"width:507px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Newsday-Week-9-Image-1-.png 611w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Newsday-Week-9-Image-1--480x638.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 611px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>CEO of a Sheffield and South Yorkshire LGBTQ+ charity, SAYiT, Nicola Fearnley- Hill, 44, expressed her disappointment for the ruling and uncertainty of the ramifications the judgement holds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cIt is obviously going to massively impact mental health and people\u2019s identity.
