{"id":72666,"date":"2025-03-31T12:46:27","date_gmt":"2025-03-31T11:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=72666"},"modified":"2025-03-31T13:46:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T12:46:37","slug":"ukrainian-refugee-led-boxing-academy-provides-joy-for-sheffields-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/31\/ukrainian-refugee-led-boxing-academy-provides-joy-for-sheffields-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukrainian refugee-led\u00a0boxing\u00a0academy provides joy for Sheffield&#8217;s youth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Ukrainian forced to flee to the UK has launched a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pohodinboxing.com\/\">boxing&nbsp;academy<\/a> to provide joy and self-confidence for young people in his new home city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oleksandr Pohodin, 35, had his own sports club in Ukraine, and was a former amateur boxer with nearly 150 bouts to his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the life-threatening upheaval of Russia\u2019s invasion on February 24 2022 prompted him and his wife to seek a safer life for their family in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Pohodin teaches a variety of backgrounds and age groups six days a week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf people spend time at this gym, they are not spending time in the street or on their cellphone and I understand when children spend time here, it helps them develop new skills and feel more self-confidence,\u201d he told the PA news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ukrainian refugee Oleksandr Pohodin is on Sky News Breakfast this morning from 6.30am \u26c5\ufe0f<br><br>He was forced to flee to the UK and has launched a boxing academy to provide joy and self-confidence for young people in his new home city \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\ud83e\udd4a<br><br>\ud83d\udcf1 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S1YAD91098\">https:\/\/t.co\/S1YAD91098<\/a><br>\ud83d\udcfa Sky 501<\/p>&mdash; Sky News (@SkyNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkyNews\/status\/1906569583009398828?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, I feel very successful when I know a child is happy to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Pohodin left Chernivtsi in south-western Ukraine in 2022 for Sheffield, via the Homes For Ukraine scheme, alongside his wife Zhanna, 40, and their children \u2013 Nika, 15, Polina, eight, and Matvii, six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2024, he founded Pohodin&nbsp;Boxing&nbsp;Academy, operating out of <a href=\"https:\/\/sydsgym.wixsite.com\/sydsgym\">Syd\u2019s Gym<\/a> in&nbsp;Sheffield, together with Syd Khaan and Benny Banaris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also received  guidance and support from Brendan Warburton, the founder of&nbsp;Sheffield&nbsp;City&nbsp;Boxing<em>&nbsp;<\/em>Club, who was awarded an MBE in 2022 for his community work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Pohodin told PA that he made contact with Mr Warburton online before arriving in England, describing him as &#8220;a very great coach and a very good person.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cBefore I came, I started a conversation with him and said, I will be in&nbsp;Sheffield, and if he wants I will start volunteering in his gym and he agreed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I opened this academy, he helped me a lot, he explained to me how all this works \u2013 100%, I think he\u2019s my mentor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added he feels particularly happy to live in&nbsp;Sheffield&nbsp;as he considers it to be the \u201ccentre of&nbsp;boxing\u201d in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Pohodin also received an employment adviser and English language training through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldjewishrelief.org\/what-we-do\/support-for-ukraine\/\">World Jewish Relief<\/a>, which has helped more than 13,000 Ukrainians rebuild their lives in the UK since 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quinn, 14, is one of Mr Pohodin\u2019s students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite trying other sports, he said he has connected with&nbsp;boxing&nbsp;the most, and cited Ukrainian boxer Vasiliy Lomachenko as one of his sporting heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cIt\u2019s been really good training with Oleksandr. I\u2019ve tried other sports like football and basketball but when I\u2019ve put the gloves on, they\u2019ve never come off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Ukrainians have taken the&nbsp;boxing&nbsp;world by storm, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Klitschko_brothers\">Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko<\/a>, and Oleksandr Usyk, who has held the unified world heavyweight championship since 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Pohodin said seeing Ukrainian boxers thrive makes him \u201cvery proud\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember when Usyk beat for the first time Tyson Fury, I am very proud he\u2019s from Ukraine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very happy Ukrainian&nbsp;boxing&nbsp;is successful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katryna Stelmakh, 30, and Natali Pryima, 28, both came to the UK from Ukraine and attend sessions with Mr Pohodin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Stelmakh arrived in the UK in February 2022 from Kyiv, while Ms Pryima came to England in June 2022 from Poltava in central Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Stelmakh, who was a doctor in her home country, said adjusting to life here was difficult due to the language barrier and finding a job, but said British people she has met have all been \u201cvery welcoming\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially joining&nbsp;boxing&nbsp;classes for her wellbeing, she said she was glad she then met fellow Ukrainians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI found our coach, Oleksandr, and then I came to the classes and met Natali here,\u201d she told PA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Pryima added: \u201cFirst of all, for me, it\u2019s a full body workout, it\u2019s a really intensive workout and it\u2019s a stress reliever.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about punching the bag, it\u2019s therapy as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Ukranian man has set up a boxing academy to provide joy for young people living in Sheffield. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":217,"featured_media":72717,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6,27],"tags":[357,9,45],"class_list":["post-72666","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-sport","tag-boxing","tag-sheffield","tag-sport"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
