{"id":72629,"date":"2025-03-24T16:47:53","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T16:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=72629"},"modified":"2025-03-24T17:00:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T17:00:37","slug":"nigel-farage-heads-to-doncaster-ahead-of-key-local-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/24\/nigel-farage-heads-to-doncaster-ahead-of-key-local-election\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigel Farage heads to Doncaster ahead of key local election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Reform Party leader will be speaking in Doncaster tomorrow as his party is expected to take over the Labour-run council in May local elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guy Aston, who is running as a candidate for the Wheatley Hills and Intake ward, said: \u201cIt\u2019s a big day in the politics of Doncaster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event comes as a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk\/news\/politics\/reform-predicted-to-take-control-of-doncaster-council-in-labour-wipeout-5036097\"> poll undertaken by Electoral Calculus<\/a> has predicted a huge swing to Reform in the local elections on 1 May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, Reform announced 55 new councillors who will be standing for wards in Doncaster and, if the polls are correct, they are set to take 32 seats where they currently have zero.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Write-your-topic-or-idea.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaining control of the council, which has been governed by a Labour majority since 2010, would be a monumental victory for Reform who have had Doncaster in their sights since the last general election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Aston said: \u201cThe overall strategy is to get a good number of councillors across the country, establishing a base for Reform and focusing on the next general election in 2029.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farage is also set to announce the party\u2019s candidate for the city\u2019s mayoral election at the event tomorrow at Doncaster Racecourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current Mayor, Labour\u2019s Ros Jones, kicked off her campaign for what would be her fourth term this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"592\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image_2025-03-24_164657030-1024x592.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72631\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image_2025-03-24_164657030-980x566.png 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image_2025-03-24_164657030-480x277.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Guy Aston<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Doncaster resident, Alan, 76, said he would be attending the Reform event on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A firm supporter of Farage, he said: \u201cI think he should be Prime Minister. He says what he thinks and everything he says is true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not everyone in Doncaster was happy about Farage\u2019s visit this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Darcy, 18, said: \u201cI think a lot of the young people around here have strong opinions about him. I don\u2019t like him. I don\u2019t like anything he stands for.
