{"id":72383,"date":"2025-03-24T14:49:01","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T14:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=72383"},"modified":"2025-03-24T16:51:29","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T16:51:29","slug":"council-housing-has-been-underinvested-in-for-decades-sheffield-housing-chair-calls-for-more-government-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/24\/council-housing-has-been-underinvested-in-for-decades-sheffield-housing-chair-calls-for-more-government-support\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cCouncil housing has been underinvested in for decades\u201d \u2013 Councillor calls for more government support"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over a hundred new council homes will be built in addition to the 1000 promised by 2029 after a \u00a312m boost was given to Sheffield City Council from Homes England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield councillor and Chair of the Housing &amp; Homelessness Committee, Douglas Johnson said: \u201c[social housing] is at a critical point where the government needs to act to make sure that council stock is still viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe difference this money makes is it means that we can keep the rents at a traditional council rent level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council have promised 112 new homes after the waitlist for council housing in Sheffield currently stands at 25,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recent budget boosts like these \u201cjust makes a small inroad\u201d into addressing the demand for housing at an accessible price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"825\" height=\"616\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-24-141438.png\" alt=\"Newstead estate where the development of new homes is due to take place. \nSourced by: Sheffield City Council\" class=\"wp-image-72469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-24-141438.png 825w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-24-141438-480x358.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 825px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Future of Council Housing Summit which took place on 6 March in Sheffield brought together over 100 council leaders nationally to address what Cllr Douglas Johnson called \u201cvery reasonable, modest demands to the government\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over recent years social housing has been affected nationally, with tightened budgets and shifting policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour declared that they would build 1.5 million homes within five years, and Sheffield City Council has pledged to deliver 40,000 new homes by 2039.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, and the summit organiser, said: \u201cCuts to our income and soaring costs have undermined our agreement with government and left a huge gap in our housing budgets. However, councils will play a critical role in reaching the government\u2019s ambition for 1.5 million new homes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"946\" height=\"552\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-24-141451.png\" alt=\"A CGI image of the Newstead estate\nSourced by: Sheffield City Council\" class=\"wp-image-72471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-24-141451.png 946w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-24-141451-480x280.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 946px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The party are currently pushing a bill through parliament which would give councils greater power to acquire land, in hopes of speeding up building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Douglas Johnson said: \u201cThat in itself probably won\u2019t make that much difference, that\u2019s not the big rocker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay providing the power to acquire new land and building housing but it\u2019s no use at all if the government doesn\u2019t provide the right amount money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chair of the Housing and Homelessness committee see the stable future of social housing stands in the \u201crevitalising\u201d of estates that were once council housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Empty council homes stood at over 1000 in 2023 and a re-focus on these empty properties and investment into repairs has seen the number fall to about 400. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, Cllr Douglas Johnson is only one in over 100 key leaders nationally, that believes the way forward is to urge the government \u201cto really focus on housing that has been neglected for so long\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over a hundred new council homes will be built in addition to the 1000 promised by 2029 after a \u00a312m boost was given to Sheffield council from Homes England. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":221,"featured_media":72465,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6,1],"tags":[70,9,58],"class_list":["post-72383","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-uncategorized","tag-housing","tag-sheffield","tag-sheffield-city-council"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
