
{"id":72051,"date":"2025-03-17T16:26:05","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T16:26:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=72051"},"modified":"2025-03-17T16:44:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T16:44:37","slug":"sheffield-council-approves-maximum-rise-in-council-tax-for-third-year-in-a-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/17\/sheffield-council-approves-maximum-rise-in-council-tax-for-third-year-in-a-row\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Council approves maximum rise in council tax for third year in a row"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Most households in Sheffield will have to pay an extra \u00a360 annually, following a third year of council tax increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield councillors have signed off on a 4.99% increase in council tax for the next year to relieve the Council&#8217;s budget constrains, the maximum amount the Council can implement without calling for a local referendum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A majority of households should expect to see an increase of \u00a31.23 per week in payment.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increase does account for the Adult Social Care Precept, which limits the effect this will have on the older or more vulnerable residents who require care and support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should provide an extra \u00a317.2m to counter the \u00a372m pressure on the Council budget, which is expected due to an increase in demand for public services and account for inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024\/25, the council approved the same increase which resulted in residents having to pay an extra \u00a31.17 a week. The year before this, the same rate was approved, which saw residents paying an extra \u00a31.12 a week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/council-spending.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72247\" style=\"width:540px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/council-spending.png 560w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/council-spending-480x294.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 560px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.gov.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-03\/revenue-budget-2025-2026.pdf\">Sheffield City Council Revenue Budget 2025\/26<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the annual increases, the council has reduced their spending by 23% since 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zahira Naz, Labour Councillor and the Council&#8217;s Finance Spokesperson, said: &#8220;We are still dealing with the long-term impact of austerity, the rising costs of delivering services and the increasing demand on social care, housing and public services.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Revenue Budget Report claims the alternatives to this increase such as finding \u00a317.2m in savings would have &#8220;too great and impact on vital services in the city.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neighbouring constituencies such as Doncaster and Rotherham have also permitted an increase in council tax, but not for the maximum percent allowed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green Party leader, Douglas Johnson, assured that all parties worked together to determine the budget since Sheffield Council is a coalition between the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats and the Green Party,  with no sole party in control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liberal Democrat Leader Shaffaq Mohammed added: &#8220;The next few years are going to be really challenging with national insurance increases, pressures on social care and international issues which will impact on this city.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most households in Sheffield will have to pay an extra \u00a360 annually, following a third year of council tax increases.
