{"id":72046,"date":"2025-03-17T13:32:31","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T13:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=72046"},"modified":"2025-03-17T14:19:38","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T14:19:38","slug":"sheffield-councillors-pledge-support-to-uk-ukrainian-community-we-have-your-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/17\/sheffield-councillors-pledge-support-to-uk-ukrainian-community-we-have-your-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield councillors pledge support to UK-Ukrainian community: \u201cWe have your back\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Two Sheffield councillors met injured soldiers, political leaders, and civilians during a recent visit to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.sheffield.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=37914\">Mark Rusling<\/a> said: \u201cOur trip won\u2019t do anything to stop the war, but if we can just provide a little bit of comfort to the Ukrainian community in the UK then we have done a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllrs Mark Rusling and <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.sheffield.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=37912\">Matt Dwyer<\/a> spent four days in Lviv, aiming to reassure the Ukrainian community they represent in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the trip is particularly important since Sheffield is twinned with the Ukrainian cities of Donetsk and Khmelnytskyi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visit, which was fully funded by the councillors, was one of multiple trips organised each year by Ukrainian people living in Britain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/6E4506CC-0B51-4BD7-B889-4A5E7B2B149F-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72056\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pictured: Mark Rusling (Credit: Mark Rusling) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Saturday, the councillors met with the Deputy Mayor of Lviv after speaking with injured frontline soldiers and citizens to gain a first-hand understanding of the war&#8217;s impact on the Ukrainian people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the trip, Councillor Rusling said: \u201cI\u2019m most looking forward to speaking to ordinary people in Lviv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to show the UK&#8217;s Ukraine community we have your back.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A meeting between US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this month raised concerns about dwindling international support for Ukraine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Rusling said: \u201cIf I were the Ukrainian refugee community living in the UK right now I\u2019d be feeling very very nervous.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut supporting Ukrainians in their fight is in the British self-interest because the lessons of the 1930s tell us people like Putin don\u2019t stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasised that the trip is not the end of the councillors&#8217; efforts to raise awareness about the war in Ukraine across Sheffield and the wider UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the visit, the councillors will meet with the Chair of the Ukrainian Community in South Yorkshire to ask what more can be done to support Ukrainians living in Sheffield.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Councillors Mark Rusling and Matt Dwyer visit Ukrainian city of Lviv. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":190,"featured_media":72057,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-72046","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
