{"id":72035,"date":"2025-03-17T13:15:18","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T13:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=72035"},"modified":"2025-03-17T16:04:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T16:04:48","slug":"light-fest-celebrates-the-wonders-of-light-to-inspire-future-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/17\/light-fest-celebrates-the-wonders-of-light-to-inspire-future-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"LightFest sparks interest among aspiring young scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 10-day celebration of research, innovation and science, came to Sheffield, hoping to inspire future generations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coinciding with the 31st <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishscienceweek.org\/\">British Science Week<\/a> (7-16 March), the University of Sheffield created an exhibition designed to get people of all ages thinking about the world of light in a different way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luisa Aguolmine, 21, a student-volunteer said: \u201cYou come to events like this and realise all kids are little scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You watch the kids playing, but what they are really doing is science experiments. They just don&#8217;t know it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/city-region\/news\/lightfest-illuminate-your-mind-free-festival-exploring-wonders-light\">LightFest<\/a>, held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldmuseums.org.uk\/visit-us\/millennium-gallery\/\">Millennium Gallery<\/a> had a range of interactive stalls, designed by researchers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition started by explaining the basics of light before moving onto explaining more complex theories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Jenny Clark, organiser of LightFest, said: \u201cWe wanted to use this research to bring our wonder with light to the public.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One stall focused on how solar energy will be used in the future as a more sustainable power source.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"706\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_3283-706x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72047\" style=\"width:823px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_3283-706x1024.jpg 706w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_3283-480x697.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 706px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Credit: Matt Black <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To explain this to the young visitors, staff used small solar-powered toy cars that could be raced when a torch was held above them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany Johnson, 19, another student-volunteer said: \u201cSome of the kids were really experimenting with the toy cars, discovering what happens if you move the torch or if you use a bigger light, which has been really great to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"701\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_3284-1-1024x701.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_3284-1-1024x701.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_3284-1-980x671.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_3284-1-480x329.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Credit: Matt Black<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, there has been an added emphasis on embedding change across the perception of STEM among younger generations, including the image of a stereotypical scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishscienceassociation.org\/\">British Science Association<\/a> (BSA), British Science Week offered events across the country, based on the theme of \u2018Change and Adaptation\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;There are women out there looking out for other women in STEM and making sure we have equal opportunities&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Kevin Fenton, President of the BSA, said: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishscienceassociation.org\/blog\/british-science-week-a-celebration-that-highlights-the-crucial-role-of-science-in-our-lives\">\u201cScience cannot be truly beneficial for all of society if all of society is not represented in science.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on this, Miss Johnson said: \u201cI want to prove that women can do things in STEM, but it is always harder, confidence-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miss Aguolmine added: \u201cWe are really lucky because one of our lecturers mentioned this opportunity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are women out there looking out for other women in STEM and making sure we have equal opportunities.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For British Science Week, the University of Sheffield collaborated to organise a exhibit looking at the wonders of light<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":215,"featured_media":72100,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[1629,9],"class_list":["post-72035","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-science","tag-sheffield"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
