{"id":71491,"date":"2025-03-03T11:58:45","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T11:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=71491"},"modified":"2025-03-03T11:58:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T11:58:48","slug":"orchid-show-shines-light-on-dying-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/03\/orchid-show-shines-light-on-dying-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Orchid Show shines light on dying art"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hundreds of people flocked to <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldorchids.co.uk\/event\/sheffield-orchid-show-2024-3\">Sheffield&#8217;s Orchid Show<\/a> this weekend, captivated by the exotic flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual show took place on Saturday in St. John&#8217;s Church Hall, Abbeydale, to celebrate the traditional art of growing orchids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Show Coordinator of the<a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldorchids.co.uk\/\"> Sheffield &amp; District Orchid Society<\/a>, Paul Hobson, reflected on the importance of change to keep orchid horticulture alive in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;Orchid growing is a dying art, things are changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Society has to adapt, and this show is a part of our adaptation to embrace the many new technological and plant growing trends within Britain.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sheffield Orchid Show\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DrESaDjewwA?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With six different societies from across the Midlands and Northern England attending the show, the hall was full of colourful stalls showcasing a large variety of orchids, all carefully curated by the members.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as orchid growers, the show attracted many different flower enthusiasts, with one attendee, Peter Walker, selling carnivorous plants on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Walker, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/wackswickedplants.co.uk\/\">Wack\u2019s Wicked Plants<\/a>, said: \u201cI think young people and kids are attracted to them because of the gruesome side to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are several groups and forums where people are obsessed with them, so I think social media definitely helps spread the love of carnivorous plants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-1024x570.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-980x545.png 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-480x267.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sheffield Orchid Show 2025<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The show saw a rise in visitors of 20-30% from last year, going up to around 300 people, which Mr Hobson attributes to the wider variety of plants on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;What we hope is that visitors buy other plants, look at the orchids and they spill into our world, because we all grow plants, we all love plants.
