{"id":71094,"date":"2025-02-24T12:47:46","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T12:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=71094"},"modified":"2025-02-24T12:47:48","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T12:47:48","slug":"sheffield-weeps-for-teenage-victim-of-knife-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/02\/24\/sheffield-weeps-for-teenage-victim-of-knife-crime\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield weeps for teenage victim of knife crime"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sheffield came together to remember the city\u2019s latest victim of knife crime on Friday and vowed that \u201cthis must never happen again\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 750 people gathered in the rain at Sheffield Cathedral on Friday, 21 February, to pay their respects to Harvey Willgoose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the funeral service, Harvey\u2019s sister, Sophie Willgoose, delivered a heartfelt poem about her brother: \u201cOne moment you\u2019re here, next, you\u2019re gone, leaving us, trying to carry on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cloving and caring\u201d 15-year-old\u2019s life was tragically cut short when he was stabbed to death at his school, All Saints Catholic School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three weeks after he was stabbed to death, Harvey was laid to rest in a heartfelt ceremony attended by close family and friends, as well as well-wishers in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXe0ZMrvYOnUfHKgUQnOOeKlZNpzqLYJYgtPp4cWJ2y2Q6YHuyJYnR4mTDO50aj3b6gRLDasdMzr5Q401v3QTsBcQXvs-NMArnX9V0BrGh5D6_eXrOqHG4iLTBBpq3qw5LhHxYWb5w?key=4y-TYY8XafsSAjj7ZM4h6rSX\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His cousin Lana Swirles also recited stories about how Harvey\u2019s laughter \u201cwas contagious, and his kindness knew no bounds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvey was lovingly called \u201cGoose\u201d by close friends and family and was a massive Blades fan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the service, Reverend Canon Abigail Thompson said: \u201cNone of us want to be here today, none of us want to be attending [Harvey&#8217;s] funeral. This must never happen again. But we are here, and we are here for each other. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since his death, the city has come together to rally against the rise of knife crime in the city and its massive impact on Sheffield\u2019s community as a whole.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcRXKJWmWFXU-XLq2agsxDvG7Z2Pf7iHh_83UWmgsuHtM-lAsFPwFwg-2iGUg5X1fKfQCalb27lvcLW90Xa7nhDlAkpyUv4qjKIlkiRjw8ysn5U58NBfGmoLKpSjFsQ7l8vEgi99A?key=4y-TYY8XafsSAjj7ZM4h6rSX\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Knife crime has risen in the UK by a large percentage since March 2023, with juveniles (aged 10-17) being the offenders in around 17.3% of cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offences involving the use of a knife have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/crimeandjustice\/bulletins\/crimeinenglandandwales\/yearendingseptember2024\">increased<\/a> in the UK by 4.4% to 55,008 by September 2024 from 52,969 in the previous year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of National Statistics also said that South Yorkshire has been ranked the fourth worst area to live in the UK for knife crime, with 10.72 offences involving a knife per 10,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A change.org <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/stop-knife-crime-in-our-schools-security-is-needed?recruiter=43848143&amp;recruited_by_id=8fbbe0c0-6d80-0130-156c-38ac6f16cbb1&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_campaign=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=facebook&amp;utm_content=fht-490407989-en-gb%3A0&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawIcLAJleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXqcdv9bQjdO6nlHxovzWlP2qJPjMxPXzdW8YwRdrURFHR9a0EPBqK5FyA_aem_JO8r09p_vJ3BRZDah10j4Q\">petition<\/a>, with almost 40,000 signatures, is campaigning for \u201cimmediate action to address the growing epidemic of knife crime in schools.&#8221; It says the increase in knife crime is accounted for by the lack of strict policies to ensure the safety of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition calls on the UK Government to implement mandatory bag checks, metal detectors, and airport-style body and bag scanners in all schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/raising-awareness-for-knife-crime-and-harvey-willgoose\">campaign<\/a> on GoFundMe started on behalf of The Ben Kinsella Trust, hopes to increase public awareness around knife crime.
