{"id":71034,"date":"2025-02-24T12:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T12:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=71034"},"modified":"2025-02-24T12:20:24","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T12:20:24","slug":"mi-amigo-plane-crash-commemorated-81-years-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/02\/24\/mi-amigo-plane-crash-commemorated-81-years-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Mi Amigo Plane Crash Commemorated 81 Years On"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Adrian Collis &amp; Grace Kulinski<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"81st Anniversary of The Mi Amigo Plane Crash\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r2PBSoUjQT0?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 81st anniversary of the crash of a World War Two US bomber was commemorated this weekend with a memorial service at Endcliffe Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plane, Mi Amigo, crashed in the park on 22 February 1944 after returning from a bombing raid, killing all 10 US pilots onboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crew sacrificed their lives by downing their plane in trees to avoid hitting surrounding houses and children playing in the park. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crash was witnessed by Tony Foulds, who was eight at the time &#8211; he has since dedicated his life to preserving the site of the memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Foulds said: &#8220;They had to make a decision, quick. Shall we try and miss these children in the park to land, or shall we die?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They decided to die.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadcaster Dan Walker, who helped arrange a flypast on the 75th anniversary in 2019, joined Tony at the memorial this year for the unveiling of a new bench to remember the crew of Mi Amigo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in attendance of the memorial was Amy Priddy, from Arkansas, US, who is the great niece of Malcolm Williams, one of the airmen who died in the crash. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 81st anniversary of the crash of a World War Two US bomber was commemorated this weekend with a memorial service at Endcliffe Park.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":225,"featured_media":71069,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-71034","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
