{"id":71022,"date":"2025-02-24T16:35:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T16:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=71022"},"modified":"2025-02-24T16:37:51","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T16:37:51","slug":"derbyshire-bridge-shortlisted-for-sustainability-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/02\/24\/derbyshire-bridge-shortlisted-for-sustainability-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Derbyshire bridge shortlisted for sustainability award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Peak District&#8217;s Cressbrook Mill footbridge has been shortlisted in the 2025 Bridges Award, thanks to its impressive sustainability credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Derbyshire bridge shortlisted for sustainability award\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/57Nbs1-xrtg?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In total, 25,781 recycled plastic bottles were diverted from landfills and transformed into the Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) used to construct the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the Peak District\u2019s unpredictable weather, the polymer was chosen for its durability, ensuring the bridge can withstand the harsh Yorkshire elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matt Cain, contracts manager at R and C Williams \u2013 the engineering company awarded the contract for the bridge \u2013 said: &#8220;These bridges are rare \u2013 it\u2019s just getting people to buy into the upfront cost, because compared to a steel or timber bridge, it\u2019s double the price. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;But then, the use of FPC means you don\u2019t have ongoing maintenance, so it\u2019s about people being long-sighted enough to see the reduced costs in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The footbridge is expected to have a multi-generational lifespan of up to 120 years. In comparison, a steel bridge which would need significant maintenance after 25 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its construction has also enabled walkers and climbers to access the Monsal Trail from Cressbrook for the first time in nearly five years, reconnecting people with one of the Peak District\u2019s most iconic landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original bridge, built in the 1980s, was deemed structurally unsafe in 2020, having succumbed to corrosion and fallen into disrepair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Cressbrook-footbridge-2024-webres-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71347\" style=\"width:442px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Cressbrook-footbridge-2024-webres-1.jpg 350w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Cressbrook-footbridge-2024-webres-1-226x300.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The original footbridge. Photo credit: Peak District National Park Authority<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several fundraising groups came together to raise the \u00a3190,000 needed to complete the project, including the Peak District National Park Authority and the British Mountaineering Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the Cressbrook Footbridge has been shortlisted in the sustainability category at the 2025 Bridges Awards. This category celebrates innovation in reducing carbon emissions through bridge design, construction, and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Cain said: &#8220;We\u2019re not a huge company, so to be shortlisted with some of your lager tier 1 contractors is great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think we\u2019re up against Transport for London in the sustainability category, so even to be shortlisted is great for us.
