{"id":70344,"date":"2024-12-13T16:04:55","date_gmt":"2024-12-13T16:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=70344"},"modified":"2024-12-13T16:05:02","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T16:05:02","slug":"liberal-democrats-retain-dodworth-ward-council-seat-in-by-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/12\/13\/liberal-democrats-retain-dodworth-ward-council-seat-in-by-election\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberal Democrats retain Dodworth Ward Council seat in by-election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Almost half of all votes were won by the Liberal Democrats last night, as they retained their third council seat in the Dodworth Ward by-election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The by-election was called following the resignation of Lib Dem Councillor Sam Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Waters, the winning Lib Dem candidate, said: \u201cI\u2019m very pleased and grateful to the people of Dodworth for supporting me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs any Councillor should be, I&#8217;ll work for all the people of Dodworth and not just the ones who voted for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 2,073 votes were cast, with the Lib Dems winning 1,029 of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reform UK placed second with 503 votes and Labour trailed in third with just 334 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Waters grew up in Doncaster, but moved to Silkstone 36 years ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Dodworth-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Andy Waters (credit: Hannah Kitching)\" class=\"wp-image-70314\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Councillor Andy Waters (credit: Hannah Kitching)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He said his main aims were support for more housing and social housing, preserving Barnsley\u2019s green spaces, safer streets and high street improvements<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His victory means all three Dodworth Ward seats remain with the Lib Dems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Waters will join previously elected councillors Chris Wray and Will Fielding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cI get on with both of them so we will work together and hopefully spread whatever caseload we get around us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Waters also added that he is looking forward to working with the rest of Barnsley\u2019s Councillors, whether in support or disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to work together, it&#8217;s part and parcel of working in the council, but we\u2019re also there to hold them to account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe more opposition we can have the better it is.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost half of all votes were won by the Liberal Democrats last night, as they retained their third council seat in the Dodworth Ward by-election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":194,"featured_media":70307,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[337,2053,2052,399,510,1724],"class_list":["post-70344","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-barnsley","tag-by-election","tag-dodworth","tag-labour","tag-lib-dems","tag-reform-uk"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
