{"id":69997,"date":"2024-12-13T12:58:11","date_gmt":"2024-12-13T12:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=69997"},"modified":"2024-12-13T14:44:34","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T14:44:34","slug":"sheffield-goes-dutch-with-accessible-west-bar-roundabout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/12\/13\/sheffield-goes-dutch-with-accessible-west-bar-roundabout\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield goes Dutch with accessible West Bar roundabout\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After a series of unexpected delays, a famed Dutch-style roundabout on West Bar opened earlier this week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffnews.com\/news\/sheffield-s-first-dutch-style-roundabout-nears-completion\/\">roundabout <\/a>was due to open in late October, but after facing a number of delays, was pushed back to Monday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It contains additional cycle lanes and pedestrian crossings to give them priority, but motorists believe it will cause confusion and more accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Connecting Sheffield: Neepsend - Kelham - City Centre, West Bar roundabout improvements\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qDLmZq9Pg-k?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rebecca Hammond, a cycling instructor and pharmacist, uses the roundabout frequently.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she felt it filled a gap in the infrastructure. She said: \u201cThe old roundabout had poor sight lines that made it difficult for drivers entering the roundabout from some directions. The new design helps with that, and will also improve safety for cyclists too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-bluesky-embed wp-block-embed-bluesky-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"bluesky-embed\" data-bluesky-uri=\"at:\/\/did:plc:rec357thnb4paf3iln3z3ofw\/app.bsky.feed.post\/3lcvmokcspc2k\" data-bluesky-cid=\"bafyreibyt46yrrawk52u376htxiul2sm2tb3rfggimjhg2hiaa5paswmqm\"><p lang=\"en\">A new roundabout is now operational at West Bar, Sheffield. Motor vehicles keep making good progress, so everyone&#39;s a winner\ud83e\udd13<\/p>&mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:rec357thnb4paf3iln3z3ofw?ref_src=embed\">Ian Carey (@ian-carey.bsky.social)<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:rec357thnb4paf3iln3z3ofw\/post\/3lcvmokcspc2k?ref_src=embed\">2024-12-09T21:00:53.781Z<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.bsky.app\/static\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben McGarry, Chair of the Kelham Island and Neepsend Community Alliance (KINCA), said: \u201cI think it\u2019s going to be a big success \u2026 it\u2019s great to go across if you\u2019re a pedestrian, because it\u2019s all zebra crossings, and you don\u2019t have to wait for grumpy drivers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffnews.com\/news\/sheffield-s-new-west-bar-roundabout-launches\">roundabout <\/a>is meant to make it easier for people to cycle and walk from the city center across to Tenter Street and Kelham\/Neepsend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This brand new Dutch-style roundabout has opened, here&#039;s how it works&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0RoD3zNEdK\">pic.twitter.com\/0RoD3zNEdK<\/a><\/p>&mdash; BBC Sheffield (@BBCSheffield) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCSheffield\/status\/1866201573908467897?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote> \n\n\n\n<p>Many cyclists feel that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.gov.uk\/travel-transport\/cycle-routes-schemes\">cycling infrastructure in Sheffield<\/a> needs a big upgrade, especially due to the hills and upward climbs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isaac Hammond, who lives in the western end of Sheffield but uses the roundabout quite frequently, thinks that the roundabout is a step in the right direction to encourage more \u201cactive travel\u201d in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cBecause the roundabout allows a completely separate, more accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians, I think it will take a bit of getting used to, especially for drivers.
