{"id":69835,"date":"2024-12-13T10:27:19","date_gmt":"2024-12-13T10:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=69835"},"modified":"2024-12-13T11:55:15","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T11:55:15","slug":"sheffield-hosts-winter-olympics-womens-ice-hockey-qualifiers-as-team-gb-triumphs-against-latvia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/12\/13\/sheffield-hosts-winter-olympics-womens-ice-hockey-qualifiers-as-team-gb-triumphs-against-latvia\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield hosts Winter Olympics Women&#8217;s Ice Hockey qualifiers as Team GB triumphs against Latvia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a strong start for<a href=\"https:\/\/icehockeyuk.co.uk\/gb-womens-team-roster\/\"> Team GB<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihf.com\/en\/static\/56966\/women_s_olympic_winter_game\">Winter Olympics qualifiers<\/a>, the team defeated Latvia 3-2 on Thursday at IceSheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield has become the centre of women\u2019s ice hockey as it hosts the Olympic Qualifiers, where Team GB faces Latvia, Spain, and the Netherlands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After winning friendly matches against Spain and the Netherlands, and a narrow 3-2 loss to Latvia earlier this year in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihf.com\/en\/events\/2024\/ww\">IIHF Women\u2019s World Championship<\/a>, Team GB was determined to rise to the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sheffield hosts Winter Olympics Women&#039;s Ice Hockey Qualifiers\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SMJNNvSfMQ8?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Team captain Jodie Alderson-Smith buried a rebound just three minutes into Thursday\u2019s match, setting the tone for GB\u2019s hard-fought 3-2 victory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the tournament, Alderson-Smith said: \u201cIt&#8217;s kind of like our revenge time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re on home ice, and we don&#8217;t like losing, so it&#8217;s definitely one that we want to get back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team GB\u2019s preparation has been about more than just skill. Players have built a strong sense of solidarity through weeks of intense training and bonding activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alderson-Smith said: \u201cWe all get along really well and the togetherness around the team is really good.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The qualifiers have also marked the debut of three new players, including 20-year-old Emma Nichols, who <a href=\"https:\/\/icehockeyuk.co.uk\/womens-oq-nichols-replaces-jackson\/\">replaced injured netminder Nicole Jackson<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nichols, who has played in the under 18s and now in Sweden, called the experience an exciting opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThe level of competition is very high, but playing in Sweden has definitely helped me prepare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Team GB, Sheffield\u2019s home support has been invaluable.&nbsp;The team has trained in the city for over a decade, and the local fans have embraced the tournament.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really nice to have the home fans cheering us on,&#8221; Nichols said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt gives us a huge boost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond their Olympic ambitions, Team GB hopes to grow the game for women and girls in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alderson-Smith said: \u201cWe want to inspire the next generation, and seeing the amount of girls that are playing around the UK now is really good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team GB\u2019s journey continues this weekend, facing Spain on Saturday and the Netherlands on Sunday, as they aim to secure their Olympic dream.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a strong start for Team GB at the Winter Olympics qualifiers, the team defeated Latvia 3-2 on Thursday at IceSheffield.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":223,"featured_media":69837,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6,27],"tags":[331,2035,9,45,2036],"class_list":["post-69835","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-sport","tag-ice-hockey","tag-olympic-qualifiers","tag-sheffield","tag-sport","tag-women-ice-hockey"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
