{"id":69006,"date":"2024-12-06T13:57:41","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T13:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=69006"},"modified":"2024-12-06T14:57:19","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T14:57:19","slug":"the-gleadless-valley-regeneration-project-we-need-to-tackle-this-says-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/12\/06\/the-gleadless-valley-regeneration-project-we-need-to-tackle-this-says-council\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Project: \u201cWe need to tackle this\u201d says council"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rehabilitating Gleadless Valley&#8217;s image should be a key part of its regeneration project said Sheffield Council leader, Tom Hunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gleadless Valley, one of Sheffield\u2019s most deprived areas, was assigned \u00a380 million in council funds to assist in improving local amenities and social housing, with plans created by three urban design companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was seven years ago. Gleadless Valley remains an area most heavily affected by poor housing and unemployment, with no action by the council or local services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents still face many of the key issues reported in 2017, when the project was announced, including anti-social behaviour (ASB), crime and fly tipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding fly tipping and the condition of the area, Councillor Hunt said: \u201cWe need to tackle this as part of the regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaintenance of public areas around the housing will make a big difference to the overall impression of the area and quality of life for residents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gleadless Valley Regeneration Project - What do local people think?\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B8BR1fLuI6Q?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave, 67 and Trevor, 68, two long-standing residents were both former members of the Gleadless Valley Tenants and Residents association. They left the association because they felt they weren\u2019t being listened to by the council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave described the state of the area as \u201can eyesore\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople come in and dump rubbish by the barrowload, and they don\u2019t care who sees them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trevor said: &#8220;The council set up cameras as a deterrent, to try and scare people off but they were ripped down by vandals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe amount of graffiti, the litter, the fly tipping, the area just isn\u2019t looked after at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_5969-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-69009\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_5969-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_5969-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Statistics of waste removal from the area indicate that volunteer led initiatives have removed over 2500 refuse sacks of waste picked up from outdoor, public spaces in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Projects like this are part of the council\u2019s initiative to encourage what they call \u201ccommunity led approaches\u201d, where residents support their own community projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tom Hunt said that the council aims to \u201clook for ways to make visible changes quickly, targeting littering hotspots and working with police to target fly tipping.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sheffield Council leader, Tom Hunt, said rehabilitating Gleadless Valley&#8217;s image should be a key part of its regeneration project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":206,"featured_media":69113,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[1346,9],"class_list":["post-69006","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-gleadless-valley","tag-sheffield"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
