{"id":68924,"date":"2024-12-06T15:21:39","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T15:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=68924"},"modified":"2024-12-06T15:21:40","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T15:21:40","slug":"sheffield-councillor-fights-for-a-fair-deal-for-social-care-providers-after-labour-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/12\/06\/sheffield-councillor-fights-for-a-fair-deal-for-social-care-providers-after-labour-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Councillor fights for &#8220;A Fair Deal for Social Care Providers&#8221; after Labour budget"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Sheffield councillor has revealed the negative impact the rise of employers&#8217; contributions tax will have on health and social care providers, and the local government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liberal Democrat councillor, Sophie Thornton, said that the Labour government has &#8220;given with one hand and taken with the other&#8221; when she proposed the motion, &#8216;A Fair Deal for Social Care Providers&#8217;, at a Sheffield City Council meeting this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal highlighted the impact the rise of National Insurance employees&#8217; contributions tax (NICs), introduced by the budget, will have on the health and social care sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also emphasised the effect on the quality of care that users will receive, as well as the financial consequences for the local government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council meeting explained that employers, from April 2025, will start paying NICs on employee&#8217;s earnings from \u00a35000 instead of the current \u00a39,100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cllr Sophie Thornton proposes motion &quot;A Fair Deal for Social Care Providers&quot;\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xm8dc_7ie-I?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal care provider at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prof-care.com\/\"> Prof- Care <\/a>Sheffield, George Granger, said: &#8220;This increase will be very hard for our staff and clients. We now may be limited to the national living wage.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Granger added that their &#8220;hands are tied&#8221; as Prof-Care will face a big struggle to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and sufficient transport for their clients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Robert Reiss, who backed Cllr Thornton&#8217;s motion, said: &#8220;Increased costs will impact employees through lower salaries in the long term and a reduction in staff numbers.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: &#8220;Adult social care is a statutory function of the council and it needs to be provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is one of the largest costs to the council, for whom budgets are already stretched, and increasing the costs to social care providers will exacerbate this further.&#8221;
