{"id":68013,"date":"2024-11-29T12:14:13","date_gmt":"2024-11-29T12:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=68013"},"modified":"2024-11-29T12:27:22","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T12:27:22","slug":"history-made-in-south-yorkshire-as-town-halls-raise-palestinian-flag-in-solidarity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/11\/29\/history-made-in-south-yorkshire-as-town-halls-raise-palestinian-flag-in-solidarity\/","title":{"rendered":"History made in South Yorkshire as Town Halls raise Palestinian flag in solidarity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br>The Palestinian flag was raised for the first time today by several Town Halls in South Yorkshire on International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The United Nations called for annual event in 1977 which is now recognised across the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley are flying the Palestinian flag after rising pressure from the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Julie Pearn, chair of Sheffield Labour Friends of Palestine, has called the day \u201chistoric in the current political context\u201d after her request to Sheffield City Council to fly the flag was initially met with hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>She said: \u201cIt is a triumph of popular organising and pressure which has forced reluctant leadership to take this moral and sound political step.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sheffield Town Hall raises Palestinian flag on UN Day of Solidarity\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xJTQgAIB6I8?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council was the first in South Yorkshire to agree to fly the flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The decision raised controversy as last year Rotherham and Sheffield flew the Israeli flag after Hamas\u2019s attack on 7 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The flag was forcibly removed by activists and replaced with a Palestinian flag which led to Sheffield City Council adopting a new flag flying protocol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Cllr Taiba Yasseen of Rotherham Council presented the largest petition in Rotherham\u2019s history, with 4,031 signatures, calling for a permanent ceasefire in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThe Israeli flag was flown because an atrocity was committed, but the Palestinian flag has never been flown yet the atrocities continue to take place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Cllr Yasseen further outlined that \u201csmall\u201d actions like this in Rotherham and South Yorkshire will contribute to pressure and influence for a permanent ceasefire and peace for the Palestinian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Dr Pearn added that she hopes the news of the action in South Yorkshire reaches Palestinians everywhere and lets them know that \u201cwe speak out on their behalf for justice, for an end to their oppression under Israeli apartheid, and for their freedom\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Palestinian flag was raised for the first time today by multiple Town Halls in South Yorkshire on the United Nations International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":198,"featured_media":68205,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[1369,58],"class_list":["post-68013","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-palestine","tag-sheffield-city-council"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
