Come on. Let\u2019s be serious.<br><br>It\u2019s a completely different game. <br><br>If you don\u2019t accept that. We will always see things differently.<br><br>The women\u2019s game is thriving. Fantastic to see. <br><br>I cannot take a thing they\u2026<\/p>&mdash; \ud83d\udc51 Joey Barton \ud83d\udc51 (@Joey7Barton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Joey7Barton\/status\/1732535415033184443?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 6, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Joey Barton&#8217;s post on X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The comments which were widely condemned, led to an outpouring of support for the people Barton attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily Herbert is a radio reporter who covers both men\u2019s and women\u2019s football for the BBC. She told SheffieldWire: \u201cWhen I first saw the posts, it was a bit of a shock, because not many people have as extreme an opinion as he does. I don\u2019t follow him, but he sometimes comes up on Twitter. You can\u2019t really escape it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has no idea what kind of impact he\u2019s having on young female journalists coming through, or even established journalists like [former England player turned pundit] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/enialuko\/?hl=en\">Eni Aluko<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On X, Barton compared Aluko to serial killer Rose West, and later Joseph Stalin and Pol Pot, claiming she had \u201cmurdered hundreds of thousands if not millions of football fans\u2019 ears in the last few years\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Herbert has not experienced direct sexist abuse online, she believes the attitudes she is seeing on social media mean it&#8217;s only be a matter of time, as misogyny is so deeply ingrained in the football media landscape.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journalist recalled experiences with some male managers who would offer the best jobs to male reporters, even though she had more insight and knowledge on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They would also criticise her work, whereas male colleagues would not receive the same treatment, but would be praised instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/61b60593-f5db-48c5-b393-367b01f3adb5-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/61b60593-f5db-48c5-b393-367b01f3adb5-980x735.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/61b60593-f5db-48c5-b393-367b01f3adb5-480x360.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Emily Herbert speaking to West Ham United head coach Rehanne Skinner (Source: Emily Herbert)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emcc.engender.org.uk\/news\/blog\/still-a-mans-game-monitoring-the-scottish-sports-media\/\">A recent survey by the University of Strathclyde<\/a> found female football journalists were frequently victims of misogynistic abuse and were generally paid less than their male counterparts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herbert also highlighted the differences between how she was treated when covering men&#8217;s games compared to women&#8217;s games. \u201cI\u2019m definitely treated like I have to explain myself more in men\u2019s football &#8211; I have to give stronger opinions and back them up more than I do in women\u2019s football.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the press box, it\u2019s very clique-y as well. I\u2019m often the only woman in the press box for a game, and that\u2019s not nice. You definitely get looks when you walk in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only five per cent of members of the Sports Journalists&#8217; Association and four per cent of members of the Football Writers&#8217; Association are female.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herbert reiterated that attitudes needed to change with the times. She said: &#8220;The prominence of the women&#8217;s game is new, and I don&#8217;t think people know how to deal with that.
