{"id":64478,"date":"2024-05-02T15:26:09","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T14:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=64478"},"modified":"2024-05-03T16:36:52","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T15:36:52","slug":"what-is-the-international-student-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/02\/what-is-the-international-student-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"The true cost of the international student crisis revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Home Office\u2019s tightening of visa rules have plunged <a href=\"http:\/\/international-students-who-are-they-and-how-often-do-they-stay-in-the-uk-after-graduating\">international students<\/a>, universities and local businesses into financial uncertainty and anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many say the crisis has the potential to ruin young lives, destroy the international reputation of UK education, and bankrupt universities across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International student enrolment in UK universities has dropped dramatically this year in the wake of huge shifts in Home Office visa policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December, Rishi Sunak announced a huge hike in the salary level required to apply for a Skilled Worker Visa, from \u00a326,200 to \u00a338,700. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Universities UK, which represents 142 institutions across the country, <a href=\"recent%20survey%20undertaken%20by%20UUK%20suggests%20that%20international%20student%20numbers%20are%20now%20declining,%20following%20a%20peak%20in%202022\/23.%20The%20results,%20from%20over%2070%20universities,%20reveal%20a%20significant%20decline%20in%20enrolments,%20especially%20of%20postgraduate%20taught%20students%20\u2013%20which%20were%20reported%20to%20be%20down%20by%20more%20than%2040%25%20in%20January%202024%20following%20the%20immigration%20rules%20changes.\">reported<\/a> that international student enrolment into postgraduate taught programmes is down 40% in 2024 as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Home Secretary James Cleverly went further, asking the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to conduct a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/mac-commissioned-to-review-the-graduate-route\/letter-from-the-home-secretary-to-professor-brian-bell-11-march-2024-accessible\">\u201crapid review\u201d<\/a> into the <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/02\/graduate-visa-what-is-it-and-why-is-it-under-threat\/\">Graduate Visa<\/a>, a post-study visa that currently allows recent graduates to live and work in the UK for two to three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visa changes have left UK <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/you-dont-even-know-if-youll-be-here-in-six-months-students-face-uncertainty-due-to-visa-review\/\">international students <\/a>feeling hopeless, uncertain, and afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/controversial-changes-to-visas-for-graduates-could-threaten-thousands-of-futures\/\">Colombian student<\/a> who has built a life in the UK &#8211; with a job she loves, a partner, and a home, is now facing the possibility she&#8217;ll be forced to abandon her dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/why-can-i-not-stay-middle-eastern-students-future-at-risk-if-visa-scheme-is-scrapped\/\">young gay man from the Middle East<\/a> fears that he&#8217;ll have to go back to a country where he must hide his sexuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/02\/security-and-stability-but-are-rising-costs-and-the-uk-jobs-market-undermining-the-graduate-visa\/\">Sri Lankan graduate <\/a>who paid \u00a31,000s up front for a Graduate Visa but was unable to find a job that would sponsor her, and has had to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/everything-is-designed-to-be-more-difficult-if-youre-not-british\/\">French woman<\/a> with Indefinite Leave to Remain still feels she&#8217;ll &#8220;never be good enough for England.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/i-came-here-for-a-better-life-indian-students-caught-in-crossfire-amidst-uk-visa-crackdown\/\">young Indian mother<\/a> who took out a loan and sold her most precious belongings to come study for a Masters in UK, and now is worried that she&#8217;ll have no choice but to return to India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And many universities are also adopting <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/university-attendance-monitoring-apps-spark-controversy-amid-surveillance-and-deportation-fears\/\">a mobile phone app<\/a> that allows an outside company to track and store student location data, which could then be used to deport international students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International students contribute <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/financial-impact-of-international-students-on-the-uk-economy\/\">\u00a341.9bn to the UK economy<\/a> each year which means every person in the UK is \u00a3560 richer because of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Labour MP for Sheffield Central <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/mp-paul-blomfield-urges-against-self-destructive-review-of-the-graduate-visas\/\">Paul Blomfield<\/a>, the city&#8217;s economy will be negatively affected if international student numbers dwindle. The economic impact is particularly severe for <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/fears-changes-to-visa-could-force-universities-close-and-bring-financial-hardship-to-cities\/\">cities with more than one university<\/a>, such as Sheffield, Manchester, and Liverpool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Migration Observatory <a href=\"https:\/\/migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk\/resources\/briefings\/student-migration-to-the-uk\/\">reports<\/a> that in the academic year of 2021\/2022, international tuition made up more than a fifth of the total income of UK universities.
