{"id":64455,"date":"2024-05-02T13:03:33","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T12:03:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=64455"},"modified":"2024-05-03T16:33:22","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T15:33:22","slug":"grassroots-team-refuse-to-be-deterred-by-ingrained-sexism-in-football","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/02\/grassroots-team-refuse-to-be-deterred-by-ingrained-sexism-in-football\/","title":{"rendered":"Grassroots team refuse to be deterred by ingrained sexism in football"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A grassroots women\u2019s football team, set up in the wake of the Lionesses\u2019 Euro 2022 victory, are determined not to be beaten by inequalities within the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This followed almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englandfootball.com\/articles\/2024\/Feb\/09\/womens-girls-football-increased-numbers-reported-by-county-fas-20240902\">1500 new female teams<\/a> that were set up across the country in the first season after Leah Williamson led England to their first major footballing trophy since the 1966 men\u2019s World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hemsworth Miners Welfare Ladies FC were re-established last year and went on to win the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women\u2019s Second Division in their debut season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite the club sharing a name and pitch with their male counterparts, there is little crossover between the teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team captain, Chloe Harrison, 34, said: &#8220;There isn&#8217;t much cohesion beyond equally splitting funds raised from event raffles, at Christmas and Easter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"539\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-05-02-at-09.20.59.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64466\" style=\"width:821px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-05-02-at-09.20.59.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-05-02-at-09.20.59-480x359.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 720px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ell Wright (pictured left, with camera) began running Hemsworth Ladies&#8217; social media accounts as part of a university project, but is hoping the opportunity will blossom into a job after she has graduated. Photo credit: Ell Wright<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/womens-grassroots-football\/\">lack of investment into grassroot football for girls <\/a>means clubs including Hemsworth Miners Welfare Ladies FC are left struggling to finance basic necessities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their debut season, players raised funds to buy their own kits, but they were restricted to shirts and shorts designed for men. A number of the team later used their own money to purchase women\u2019s shorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wing-back, Nim Fenton said: \u201cIt was frustrating having done all that fundraising to get that kit in the first place, only to then go and buy your own shorts.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hemsworth will be getting female-fitting kits ahead of their 2024\/25 campaign, but this is only one of the obstacles they have had to overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the Hemsworth players choose to wear men\u2019s boots. Although this is personal preference, <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/female-footballers-risking-injury-due-to-inadequate-footwear\/\">the market for boots designed for women is limited<\/a>, and therefore expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_0472Sunday-25th-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_0472Sunday-25th-980x653.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_0472Sunday-25th-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">It was all smiles after Hemsworth won the league in their debut season!
