
{"id":64070,"date":"2024-05-03T10:52:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T09:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=64070"},"modified":"2024-05-03T10:52:02","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T09:52:02","slug":"creative-sign-language-brings-stories-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/03\/creative-sign-language-brings-stories-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Creative sign language brings stories to life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The importance of artistic creativity when using sign language brings stories to life for people suffering from hearing loss, according to an award-winning poet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Performer, Zoe McWhinney, uses British Sign Language (BSL) and Visual Vernacular (VV)  in storytelling workshops to show how adaptable and inclusive the specialist form of communication is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zoe, 27, from London, who has worked as an actor as well as alongside theatres, first became interested in poetry as a little girl, when reading bedtime stories and French comics, with her deaf family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cI liked playing with imagination with my brothers and deaf friends growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Zoe was awarded second place in the BSL Poet Laureate competition hosted by the British Deaf Association, for her poem about the history of BSL. It was the first-ever national competition celebrating BSL and VV poetry in the UK, which has returned this year after a successful run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zoe\u2019s entry poem is a mixture of BSL and Visual Vernacular, or VV, which is a form of creative performance used predominantly by deaf artists which utilises BSL, mime, and physical theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cIt\u2019s much more cinematic and visceral, than written poetry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zoe McWhinney performs the Sugar Plum Fairy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h5QJVpujYN4?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An example of a sign language \/ visual vernacular performance by Zoe McWhinney.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of sign language goes back to Dorothy (Dot) Miles, who is widely believed to be the pioneer of BSL poetry, and inspired many who followed in her footsteps. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zoe, alongside, Pazbi Zavatzki, is a co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bslslam_official\/?hl=en\">BSL Slam<\/a>, a grassroots slam poetry group which hosted the UK&#8217;s first competition in 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: &#8220;We wanted a poetry slam event to happen somehow, and formed a volunteer team from our close friends and family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there are no plans to hold another slam poetry event under the same name, Zoe is currently co-hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandsfilms.co.uk\/sands-films-music-room.html\">Dancing Elephants<\/a>, a series of performance events in Rotherhithe named after one of Dot Miles\u2019s poems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201c[The events] have similar premises of having open stage for a mixture of new and established literary and performing talents, be it stand-up comedy, or indeed poetry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zoe regularly posts about her work and other creative involvements on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rapuznel\">Instagram<\/a>, and her videos can also be found under the #BardOfBSL hashtag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:74px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/unnamed-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64082\" style=\"width:823px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/unnamed-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/unnamed-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/unnamed-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/unnamed-3-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/unnamed-3-1080x720.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Zoe reciting a recent favourite poem she created, Jellyfish Dream.
