I want to use my voice to make a change on behalf of the many whose voices are not listened to. Pls plz sign and share this means sooo sooo much to me and ALL survious  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/twLjvww3I7\">https:\/\/t.co\/twLjvww3I7<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Melanie Janine Brown MBE (@OfficialMelB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OfficialMelB\/status\/1781394560058310933?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 19, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The new petition is calling on the government to act on the recommendations of the <a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/646e0e577dd6e7000ca9b2f8\/harm-panel-delivery-update.pdf\">2020 Harm Panel Report<\/a>, which called for significant changes in the way child victims domestic abuse are handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report said victims believe there is a lack of understanding in the Family Court system which leads to minimisation of the abuse and re-traumatisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being published nearly four years ago, some changes have not yet been implemented and are desperately needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing in the Family Court can be an incredibly difficult challenge, with many domestic abuse survivors explaining they feel like they are the ones who are on trial and are scared to even sit in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teresa Parker, Head of Media Brand &amp; Relationships at Women\u2019s Aid, said: \u201cSurvivors don\u2019t feel safe within the system, don\u2019t feel represented, and feel like this process is an extension of the abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a huge negative effect on a survivor&#8217;s mental health when they tell you: \u2018\u2018I\u2019ve done, on paper, all the right things, yet I\u2019m being blamed, I\u2019ve been the victim but it\u2019s all been spun around and I am exhausted\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/32-TERESA-PARKER_-16-min-1-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/32-TERESA-PARKER_-16-min-1-980x700.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/32-TERESA-PARKER_-16-min-1-480x343.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Teresa Parker, Head of Media Brand &amp; Relationships at Women\u2019s Aid. Credit: Women&#8217;s Aid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Women\u2019s Aid, which is celebrating its <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/04\/22\/womens-aid-marks-50-years-of-battling-domestic-abuse\/\">50th anniversary<\/a> this year, believe the problem starts with judges and the training, or lack of, which they receive. This can stem from the background which they come from or simply naivety to what victims and survivors experience each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Parker said the stigma about what domestic abuse is and what we think a victim looks like needs to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVictims still say to us: \u2018I know it\u2019s not a good relationship, but he hasn\u2019t hit me\u2019,\u201d said Ms Parker. \u201cWhen some judges themselves don\u2019t understand coercive control, it is so deeply unhealthy in terms of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Teresa Parker, Women&#039;s Aid interview\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yaIGIutnjNU?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Between March 2022 and March 2023, only 6.8% of all domestic abuse related crimes brought to court ended in a charge of summons, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/crimeandjustice\/datasets\/domesticabuseandthecriminaljusticesystemappendixtables\">Office for National Statistics<\/a>. Women\u2019s Aid explained this leads to many women believing there isn\u2019t any point in taking their case to court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Parker added: \u201cWhen you look at experiences in the family courts and at low conviction rates in criminal courts, survivors often think is it worth doing it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing that has been effective with our work with patrons and ambassadors, including Mel B; she is the opposite of what many people think a survivor of domestic abuse is. By showing different people, with very different personalities \u2013 including some of the most absolutely, amazingly, outwardly strong women \u2013 can experience abuse and you don\u2019t experience abuse because you\u2019re almost like a victim by nature. I think that by busting those myths, and the work we\u2019re doing right now with Mel, with you openly says: \u2018I\u2019m Scary Spice. If this can happen to me, literally, it can happen to anybody.\u2019 It cuts through that conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou think of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Mo_Mitchell\">\u201cLittle Mo\u201d Mitchell<\/a> from EastEnders, you think of somebody who\u2019s meek, so that storytelling is so powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women\u2019s Aid has worked closely with <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/04\/22\/i-want-to-go-knowing-that-i-have-left-a-legacy-for-jack-and-paul-domestic-abuse-survivors-fight-to-make-family-courts-safer\/\">Claire Throssell<\/a>, a domestic abuse survivor, from Penistone, Sheffield.
