The launch of its youth squad this summer will make it one of just three clubs in the region with a youth division \u2014 a move that according to the team will ensure its \u201csustainability and longevity\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver the past few years it\u2019s become really obvious that without a youth team being set up, clubs just won\u2019t survive modern day GAA in Britain,\u201d club secretary Michael McIvor told Sheffield Wire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FGaelicGamesCouncilofBritain%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02sMcndUUY5ZLR22Be68nfmc8oFWFdrNdwmiAyd8TvJVZXgHzxhjBQJs2SuVSQB2vrl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>McIvor and club chairperson Niall Murphy started the squad with \u201cjust \u00a3150 worth of equipment\u201d. The team now has 50 players across its men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams and a home ground on Warminster Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club hopes that the introduction of a youth squad will allow Gaelic football to continue growing among second and third generation players, as well as those who have no ties to Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have players from Canada and South Africa as well as a lot of English players who just wanted to try something different,\u201d said McIvor, who played for the Derry minor team before migrating to England.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/431200152_943462577787620_4000429067881564892_n-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61073\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/431200152_943462577787620_4000429067881564892_n-980x551.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/431200152_943462577787620_4000429067881564892_n-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The current St Vincent&#8217;s women&#8217;s squad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan comes after York GAA, which was founded shortly before St Vincent\u2019s, folded at the beginning of the last season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The same number of boys and girls are not coming over any more,&#8221; said Gaelic Games Council of Britain Chairperson Sean Hopkins. &#8220;There&#8217;s only a trickle now of what there used to be. For the game to continue it needs to be home-grown.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Committee members of St Vincent\u2019s met with the Gaelic council of Great Britain earlier this month to discuss the plan, which they hope to launch with a six-week training camp in the summer after staff have undergone all the necessary certifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the club said that the plan \u201cis in its infancy\u201d, 28-year-old teacher and player Sarah Carberry said that targeting primary schools in the area will be key.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we\u2019re not going to see any gain on our senior teams now, in nine years time those kids will be playing seniors,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re more likely in primary school to not be in a sport yet \u2014 to not be committed already.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carberry, who is originally from Tyrone, runs an afterschool Gaelic programme and said the \u201cuptake has been huge\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1016\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/305755603_509849844482231_5563563774304765393_n-1024x1016.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61075\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/305755603_509849844482231_5563563774304765393_n-1024x1016.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/305755603_509849844482231_5563563774304765393_n-980x972.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/305755603_509849844482231_5563563774304765393_n-480x476.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The 2022 men&#8217;s squad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>St Vincent\u2019s plan has been praised by Yorkshire Ladies Gaelic Football Association chair Kevin Cornelly, who said: \u201cWe can\u2019t keep going to the same well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom my own personal point of view the need to keep the culture and heritage going is very important,\u201d he told Sheffield Wire. \u201cIt goes back to my mum and dad coming over here. And now I have two granddaughters who I want to be able to do this in 15 or 16 years\u2019 time.
