{"id":60826,"date":"2024-04-15T14:09:03","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T13:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=60826"},"modified":"2024-04-15T14:39:29","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T13:39:29","slug":"world-mourns-35-years-since-the-hillsborough-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/04\/15\/world-mourns-35-years-since-the-hillsborough-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"World mourns 35 years since the Hillsborough Disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Today marks the 35th anniversary of one of football\u2019s greatest tragedies &#8211; the Hillsborough Disaster &#8211; when 97 people were unlawfully killed attending an FA Cup semi-final tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tragedy unfolded primarily due to overcrowding in the Leppings Lane stand, which led to a crush of fans in one of the standing terraces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation was exacerbated by inadequate crowd control measures, poor stadium design, and the failure of police to properly manage the influx of fans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As fans entered the stadium, many were directed towards the already congested central pens, rather than the less crowded side pens. This led to crushing as the central pens became overcrowded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite pleas from fans, the match was not halted.
