{"id":60782,"date":"2024-04-15T13:09:52","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T12:09:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=60782"},"modified":"2024-04-15T13:09:53","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T12:09:53","slug":"sheffield-priest-who-led-nine-oclock-service-facing-crown-court-today-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/04\/15\/sheffield-priest-who-led-nine-oclock-service-facing-crown-court-today-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield priest who led Nine O\u2019Clock Service facing Crown Court today"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Sheffield priest who led an evangelical movement will appear in Crown Court today after being charged with 34 sexual abuse charges, <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/author\/jop23hlp\/\">Holly Phillips<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christopher Brain, 66, was charged with one count of rape and 33 counts of indecent assault in relation to allegations made by 11 women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He will face Sheffield Crown Court this afternoon for his plea and trial preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Reverend first appeared at Sheffield Magistrates\u2019 Court on Monday 18 March for a four-minute hearing where District Judge Marcus Waite granted him unconditional bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brain, of Park Road, Wilmslow, Cheshire, led the Nine O\u2019Clock Service in Sheffield between 1986 and 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service was held in Ponds Forge sport complex in Sheffield city centre after moving from St Thomas\u2019 Church in Crookes, with the \u2018rave-inspired\u2019 church gaining a large following from young worshippers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Yorkshire Police investigated the church leader for over four years after a member of the Nine O\u2019Clock Service came forward with claims about the Reverend\u2019s behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church\u2019s authorities are carrying out their own investigation into the past leadership of the congregation.
