{"id":60713,"date":"2024-04-15T11:51:30","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T10:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=60713"},"modified":"2024-04-15T11:51:32","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T10:51:32","slug":"steve-coogan-blasts-water-company-greenwashing-over-lake-windermere-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/04\/15\/steve-coogan-blasts-water-company-greenwashing-over-lake-windermere-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Steve Coogan blasts water company \u2018greenwashing\u2019 over Lake Windermere pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Laura Harding, PA Media<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steve Coogan has accused United Utilities of \u201cgreenwashing\u201d and \u201cPR spin\u201d as he criticised the company for putting sewage into Lake Windermere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The I\u2019m Alan Partridge star joined a protest outside the North West water company\u2019s offices near the lake as he called on the Government to compel them to clean up England\u2019s largest lake rather than pay huge dividends to shareholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He told ITV\u2019s Good Morning Britain: \u201cUnited Utilities have a big PR machine and they put nice fancy offices up like this and say we\u2019re working together with the people of Windermere but it\u2019s all a smokescreen to distract attention from what they\u2019ve been doing over the last 30 years, which is putting treated and untreated sewage into Lake Windermere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s to such an extent that there are toxic levels of algae, there are algae blooms that show the nitrate levels are like through the roof. And they\u2019ve been doing this year on year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cThey have been paying out record dividends to shareholders, there\u2019s no excuse for this.
