{"id":56593,"date":"2024-03-18T15:58:50","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T15:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=56593"},"modified":"2024-03-18T15:58:52","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T15:58:52","slug":"doncaster-mp-rules-out-crossing-the-floor-amid-anderson-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/18\/doncaster-mp-rules-out-crossing-the-floor-amid-anderson-switch\/","title":{"rendered":"Doncaster MP rules out crossing the floor amid Anderson switch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A Doncaster MP has rebuffed calls for him to follow his \u201cgreat friend\u201d Lee Anderson and defect to Reform UK.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to GB News last week, Nick Fletcher, MP for Don Valley, said he would continue to stand by the Conservative Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This came as Mr Anderson, who previously served as the Conservatives\u2019 Deputy Chair, became Reform UK\u2019s first MP last week after losing the Conservative whip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about his political future, Mr Fletcher said: \u201cMy constituents voted for a Conservative candidate and they will keep a Conservative candidate until the next election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Mr Fletcher and Mr Anderson were elected as part of the \u2018Red Wall\u2019 at the 2019 General Election, the latter for the Nottinghamshire constituency of Ashfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have worked closely together in the years since, with Mr Anderson speaking to the Don Valley Conservative Association back in February as a guest of Mr Fletcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Don Valley MP also defended Mr Anderson, following his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-68392621\">suspension from the Conservatives<\/a> due to alleged Islamophobic comments he made towards the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">STANDING UP FOR A FRIEND <br><br>Often in these situations, I believe we only add fuel to the fire and keep a media storm going by commenting about it on social media. I believe this is one of\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fDIVwx8s8M\">https:\/\/t.co\/fDIVwx8s8M<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Nick Fletcher MP (@NickFletcherMP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NickFletcherMP\/status\/1762799044156334270?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have been very fortunate to have known Lee Anderson for four years,\u201d Mr Fletcher said on X, \u201che is a great friend and not a racist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk\/news\/politics\/voters-urge-doncaster-mp-to-quit-tories-and-follow-good-friend-lee-anderson-to-reform-uk-4551443\">Doncaster Free Press<\/a>, some of Mr Fletcher\u2019s constituents have urged him to follow in Mr Anderson\u2019s footsteps and join Reform UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The party, formerly known as the Brexit Party, rose to national attention when former UKIP leader, Nigel Farage, became leader in March 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The party returned the largest number of British seats in the 2019 European Parliament elections before unilaterally deciding not to contest Conservative-held seats at the 2019 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was seen as a huge contributing factor to the Conservatives winning an 80 seat majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Fletcher said: \u201cI wish Lee all the best.
