In the dispute, miners in Rotherham fought the attempts of Margaret Thatcher&#8217;s government to break up the miners\u2019 union and the labour movement, close down the coal mines, and make the way to a free market economy. Thousands of miners were sacked, arrested, fined, or imprisoned, and some of them never worked again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour MP for Gateshead Ian Mearns has criticised Thatcher\u2019s action during the strike as \u201ca politically motivated attempt to provoke the strike and smash a union\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"731\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/ff1w7kyp.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/ff1w7kyp.png 731w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/ff1w7kyp-480x374.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 731px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">MP Ian Mearns, Credit:&nbsp;Chris McAndrew \/ UK Parliament&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Mearns is the sponsor of the Early Day Motion, which has been submitted for debate in the House of Commons but has not yet been scheduled for discussion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He helped run and coordinate a miners support group in Felling, Gateshead, where they provided food parcels each week to striking miners&#8217; families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Mearns said: \u201cMy dad was a miner and many of my friends in Parliament were miners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey deserve our support throughout. We do well not to forget that piece of political history.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move by the MPs has thrilled campaigners from the advocacy group Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, who first campaigned the Home Office in December 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin Horne, an ex-miner arrested who was arrested during the strike at Orgreave, said it is \u201cnice to have the support&#8221; from the MPs who signed the campaign call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"636\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zotlgbje.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zotlgbje.png 750w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zotlgbje-480x407.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 750px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kevin Horne (left) with his son<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Horne said: \u201cWe want an inquiry into the whole event of the minor strike. That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re aiming for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMass police occupied villages in South Yorkshire.
