{"id":56219,"date":"2024-03-18T12:34:34","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T12:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=56219"},"modified":"2024-04-26T13:28:29","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T12:28:29","slug":"cycle-ride-for-cancer-charity-helps-preserve-legacy-of-killamarsh-murder-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/18\/cycle-ride-for-cancer-charity-helps-preserve-legacy-of-killamarsh-murder-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"Cycle ride for cancer charity helps preserve legacy of Killamarsh murder victims"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A cancer charity cycle ride in memory of the victims of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.derbytelegraph.co.uk\/news\/local-news\/killamarsh-murders-how-psychopath-damien-8363291\">Killamarsh murders<\/a> took place between Sheffield\u2019s football clubs on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organised by the chairman of Sheffield City Football Club and friends and family of the victims, the event has so far raised over \u00a31,300 for the Youth Cancer Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cyclists endured a 40-mile trip spanning Chesterfield, Dronfield, Stocksbridge and Sheffield, visiting eight football clubs en route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sheffield City FC: Cycle ride for cancer charity crosses finish line\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fBeMLDPXAsA?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The moment the cycling team crossed the finishing line at the Olympic Legacy Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cameron Barton, 15, who was best friends with the Killamarsh victims, participated in the ride and said: \u201cGoing up to Stocksbridge, I pulled my quad and I thought I couldn\u2019t do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just kept thinking I\u2019ve got to get through it for the cause and for them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Paul Bennett, 13, Lacey Bennett, 11, and their friend Connie Gent, 11, were murdered in 2021 by John and Lacey\u2019s stepdad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their pregnant mother, Terri Harris, 35, was also killed in the incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly before the tragedy, the children had been selling sweets to raise money for the Youth Cancer Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cameron\u2019s uncle, Jamie Barton, is chairman of Sheffield City FC and wanted to help preserve their legacy by continuing their fundraising efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Barton said: \u201cThere were a couple of times we were fatiguing and I just kept saying it\u2019s what we\u2019re doing it for to push us on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe support has been amazing from the club and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-03-18-at-11.59.14-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-03-18-at-11.59.14-980x735.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-03-18-at-11.59.14-480x360.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jamie Barton, chairman of Sheffield City FC, and his nephew, Cameron Barton (photo: Joseph Gilbert)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Six people participated in the cycle ride, including Mr Barton\u2019s 12-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They began outside Chesterfield Stadium at 7am, before tackling Sheffield\u2019s gruelling hills up to Stockbridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group then returned to the city, crossing the finishing line at the Olympic Legacy Park before Sheffield City\u2019s final match of the season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Cycle Route\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/nFwgs\/2\/#?secret=dii4yULj8i\" data-secret=\"dii4yULj8i\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"550\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on the route, Mr Barton joked: \u201cWhy in God\u2019s name did we choose to do it in Sheffield?
