A leisure complex in Doncaster, which was once among the largest in Europe, is set to receive a multi-million-pound refurbishment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dome Leisure Centre, located adjacent to Doncaster Racecourse, was initially given approval for \u00a314.4m to be refurbished by the City of Doncaster Council\u2019s Cabinet on 7 February<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, a Full Council meeting voted to approve its Capital Budget for the next four years, confirming the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking after the Cabinet approval earlier this month, Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Minister for Public Health said: \u201cThis investment in leisure is vital and is a testament to our dedication to health and leisure at a time where other councils are closing venues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dome was opened in November 1989 by Princess Diana and formed the cornerstone of a new Doncaster suburb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The completion of a nearby 50-acre man-made lake in the early 2000s catalysed development in the area which became known as Lakeside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2011, the Dome became the centrepiece for the new Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust and the building was given Grade II-listed status by Historic England last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DCLT Chief Executive, Michael Hart, said: \u201cWe are thrilled that the City of Doncaster Council\u2019s cabinet approved the funding for the refurbishment of Doncaster Dome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The refurbishment will largely centre around the Lagoons, the centre\u2019s swimming complex. According to City of Doncaster Council, the Lagoons will be shut for about a year but other parts of the centre will remain open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investment makes up a notable chunk of the \u00a3193m set aside by the council for 2024\/25. In total, almost \u00a3600m has been budgeted for the next year, excluding Housing Benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
